Jordan Spieth gets 2021 Masters odds boost with win at Valero Texas Open

Former Masters champion Jordan Spieth is now a second favorite to win the green jacket this weekend at Augusta National following his victory Sunday at the Valero Texas Open.

Back in its usual April spot, the 2021 Masters Tournament tees off Thursday morning from Augusta National and 2015 winner Jordan Spieth is riding a wave of momentum following his victory Sunday at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Spieth was +1200 on the William Hill Sportsbook golf odds to win a second green jacket but is now a +1000 second favorite with Justin Thomas behind defending champion Dustin Johnson (+900).

Sunday's win was Spieth's first on the PGA Tour since the 2017 British Open, and he shot 67 or better in three of the four rounds at the Texas Open to finish at 18 under and beat out Charley Hoffman by two strokes.

"It's been a long road," Spieth said after his first victory in exactly 1,351 days. "There's peaks and valleys in this sport, but I never expected to go this long. Back then, in between wins, maybe I took things more for granted than I should have. It's very difficult to win out here and I'll certainly enjoy this one as much as I have any other."

The former world No. 1 will look to become just the third player since 1960 to win at Augusta after winning the week before the Masters. Phil Mickelson won a green jacket in 2006 after winning the week prior at the BellSouth Classic, and Sandy Lyle did it in 1988 after winning the Greater Greensboro Open.

Spieth is now the fifth player in the last 40 years to win 12 or more events before age 28, joining Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Thomas. Woods, the five-time Masters champion, will not play this week or likely this year as he recovers from serious injuries suffered in a car accident last month on the Los Angeles area.

In 2015, Spieth shot 18-under 270 in winning the Masters by four shots. He led wire-to-wire and was the second-youngest player to ever win at Augusta (he's now 27). Spieth finished co-runner-up the next year but hasn't contended the past two Masters with a finish of T46 last November and T21 in 2019.

Spieth is +1800 at William Hill to be the first-round leader. His best first-round score at Augusta is 66, which he shot in 2016 and 2018. For a Top 10 overall, he's +100. You can also bet him as the top former University of Texas player at -150 against Scottie Scheffler (+200) and Dylan Frittelli (+450).

    • Justin Thomas +1000
