2023 PGA Championship golf odds: Tiger Woods to miss next major at Oak Hill, injured Jordan Spieth will try to play

Tiger Woods is out of the 2023 PGA Championship.

It was always very unlikely that Tiger Woods was going to play in next week's PGA Championship at Oak Hill after he withdrew from the Masters due to aggravation of a plantar fasciitis injury in his right foot. Woods then had surgery last month to address post-traumatic arthritis in his right ankle that was caused by injuries suffered in a February 2021 car wreck. Tiger had been +10000 at Caesars Sportsbook to win the 2023 PGA Championship but officially will miss the tournament – and potentially the rest of the year.

The entry list for the PGA Championship, which will be held May 18-21 at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y., was released Wednesday and Woods wasn't on it. He has won the event four times, one shy of Jack Nicklaus' record (he also finished runner-up four times). Woods last won the PGA in 2007 and was a runner-up as recently as 2018 to Brooks Koepka.

In a hint that Woods isn't expecting to play this year, Joe LaCava, Tiger's longtime caddie, has a new full-time job looping for Patrick Cantlay. The move appears to be permanent. Woods won 12 worldwide tournaments with LaCava, including his 15th major championship, the 2019 Masters. Woods' last tournament victory came in 2019 at the Zozo Championship, where he tied Sam Snead's record with 82 career PGA Tour victories.

It's the fourth time that Oak Hill is hosting the PGA Championship. When the tournament was last there in 2013 -- when it was still played in August -- Jason Dufner won at 10-under 270. Woods finished tied for 40th at +4.

Jordan Spieth is only missing a PGA Championship win in his quest for a career grand slam -- five players have done it, including Woods -- and will try to play despite withdrawing from this week's AT&T Byron Nelson in his native Texas with left wrist injury. He said doctors confirmed an injury that requires rest and limited movement.

Spieth last captured a major championship at the 2017 British Open and is +2800 at Caesars to win next week. He missed the cut at Oak Hill 10 years ago. World No. 1 Jon Rahm, this years' Masters winner, is the +700 favorite. He has yet to win the PGA Championship and no player from Spain has won it.

The defending champion is Justin Thomas, who won the tournament for the second time in his career last year by beating Will Zalatoris in a playoff at Southern Hills. Thomas is +1800 to win next week. No player has captured a third title at the PGA since it changed from match play to stroke play. Zalatoris is out this year with an injury.
