2023 Masters golf odds, trends: Bettors hammering Tiger Woods to make cut, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka to miss weekend

The Masters tees off Thursday morning from Augusta National.

It really doesn't much matter whether Tiger Woods is fully healthy or in good form. Woods is so wildly popular that he'll always going to take heavy "positive" betting action regardless of the tournament he enters. Woods is a five-time Masters champion, and while at this point in his career he's unlikely to tie Jack Nicklaus' record of six green jackets on Sunday, he's still generating plenty of action at BetMGM ahead of Thursday's first round of the 87th Masters at Augusta.

The book's biggest liability to win the tournament is Woods at +6600, even though he has risen from an open of +4000. The next two biggest liabilities are on former winners Jordan Spieth (+1800) and Scottie Scheffler (+700). The defending champion Scheffler is No. 1 in overall handle to win at 13.5% and tickets sold at 8.7%, but the book is more exposed on Woods simply due to his long-shot price (he's taking the seventh-most action).

Rather amazingly, Tiger has missed the cut just once at Augusta, way back in 1996. By far the most tickets sold on the book's make/miss cut props are on Woods to make at -200 (opened -190), followed by Cameron Smith at -550 and former winner and Champions Tour player Bernhard Langer at +200. Woods will tee off at 10:18 a.m. ET Thursday alongside Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele.

"Tiger Woods specials are always very popular. Woods to make the cut is our most-bet-on prop at the moment," said Christian Cipollini, Sports Trader at BetMGM.

The three most popular bets to miss the cut are all on LIV players: Three-time winner Phil Mickelson (-110), Bryson DeChambeau (+140) and Brooks Koepka (+240), who is finally healthy and just won on the LIV Tour on Sunday in Orlando. Koepka pocketed a $4 million winner's prize – $1.3 million more than the winner this week will get.

Koepka missed the Masters cut the past two years but was a runner-up in 2019. DeChambeau hasn't contended at Augusta and had his first missed cut last year, shooting 76-80.

To lead after Round 1, the book is most exposed on Cameron Smith at +2800 as he's taking 7.4% of the handle and 6.4% of the tickets. Rory McIlroy, at +1400, is taking 8.6% of the handle and 6.3% of the tickets. McIlroy is looking to complete the career Grand Slam. He will tee off with Tom Kim and Sam Burns at 1:48 p.m. ET Thursday.

Other popular prop bets so far at BetMGM include:

    • Any LIV Tour player to win +500
    • A hole in one to happen in Round 1 +750
    • An albatross to happen in the tournament +1200 *
    • Gordon Sargent to be the top amateur +130

The 19-year-old Sargent, a sophomore at Vanderbilt and the reigning NCAA champion, is the first amateur in two decades to receive special exemption to Augusta National. He is currently No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and the two main collegiate rankings. Sargent is scheduled to tee off in the first round at 12:48 p.m. ET Thursday with Zach Johnson (2007 Masters champion) and Jason Day. This year's field at the Masters features seven amateurs.

*Just in case you are new to golf: An albatross is a double-eagle – i.e. three strokes under par on a hole. An albatross has been made at the Masters four times, most recently by Louis Oosthuizen in 2012.
