Martin's Past Picks
The Juventus defense has been formidable in the early weeks of the new Serie A season. They beat Frosinone 1-0 on the road in their opener, before clinching a 2-0 victory over Parma on Saturday. AC Milan have also looked solid in defense under new manager Ruben Amorim. They beat Torino 2-1 in their opener, but Torino scored in the 94th minute with their only shot on target in the entire game. The Rossoneri then beat Venezia 2-0 in their second game. Under 2.5 goals has paid off in the last three games between these teams, and it has also landed in six of their last seven matches.
Roma have made a blistering start to the new season, beating Lecce 4-0 in their opener and Fiorentina 4-0 on Monday. Donyell Malen is on fire, with five goals in two games so far, and fellow forward Paulo Dybala is also improving. Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini will now face Atalanta, his former club, on Matchday 3, and it promises to be an intriguing game. Atalanta aren’t quite as gung-ho as they were during Gasperini’s tenure, but they’re still often involved in high-scoring matches, so over 2.5 goals looks sensible here.
Como should extend their unbeaten start to the new Serie A season when they face Genoa at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Cesc Fabregas’ men drew 1-1 with Udinese in their opener, before securing an impressive 2-1 victory over Napoli last weekend. Both of those games were on the road, so they won’t be daunted by the prospect of heading to Genoa. They beat Genoa 2-0 at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in April, which could give them a psychological advantage. Genoa have made a poor start to the season, losing 2-0 to Napoli and 1-0 to Lazio, and they could be outclassed here.
This could be a tense, low-scoring game between two teams that struggle to generate chances. Under 2.5 goals has paid off in 63% of Lecce's games this season. They've only managed to score 24 times in 35 matches, but they're pretty solid in defense. Under 2.5 goals has also landed in 60% of Juventus' games, and it has paid off in two-thirds of their away matches. The Bianconeri are strong at the back, but they don't score many goals either. These teams played out a 1-1 draw earlier this season, so under 2.5 goals looks appealing.
Como should return to winning ways when they take on Genoa this weekend. Cesc Fabregas' side have slipped down to fifth in the Serie A table after losing their last two games - 4-3 to Inter and 2-1 to Como. They then lost 3-2 to Inter in the Coppa Italia semifinals on Tuesday, so they need to put that heartbreak behind them. They've been playing well in recent weeks, without getting the results they deserve, but things should finally click into place on Sunday. Genoa have nothing left to play for this season, and they could struggle against a team that has a point to prove.
Roma will move 7 points clear of Atalanta if they win this high-profile game on Saturday. These teams are sixth and seventh respectively in the Serie A table. Whoever finishes sixth will clinch a place in the Europa Conference League next season, so both teams should be highly motivated. Roma are also just 4 points behind fourth-placed Juventus, so they still have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League. They have a terrific home record, with 11 wins from 16 games this season. Atalanta have only won five of their 15 away matches, so Roma should have the edge here.
Napoli should extend their winning streak to six games when they take on Parma at Stadio Ennio Tardini this weekend. Antonio Conte’s men moved up to second in the Serie A table after beating AC Milan 1-0 on Monday. They’re 7 points behind league leaders Inter Milan, but they’re still in with a chance of winning the title, so they’ll be fired-up for this game. Parma have lost seven out of 15 home games this season, and they could be outclassed by this resurgent Napoli team.
Napoli should pick up a vital away win against Cagliari, who are on a six-game winless streak in Serie A. The Sardinians low on confidence right now, and they could struggle to deal with a strong Napoli team. Napoli have a solid away record, with eight wins from 15 games on the road, and they should have too much firepower for Cagliari to handle.
Inter Milan will be desperate to bounce back from their humiliating 2-1 defeat to Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday night. The Nerazzurri crashed out of the Champions League following that defeat, so they can now focus 100% on winning Seri A. They're 10 points clear of their closest rivals at the top of the table after winning their last seven league matches. Inter beat Genoa 2-1 on the road earlier this season, and they should win by a heavier margin when the teams renew hostilities this weekend.
This is a must-win game for Napoli. The Italian champions are already 9 points behind title rivals Inter Milan, and they cannot afford to lose any more ground. Their away form has been inconsistent this season: six wins, one draw, and five defeats from 12 games. However, Genoa tend to struggle at home. They’ve lost five of their 12 home matches this season, as they don’t have a great deal of firepower in attack. Napoli are unbeaten in their last seven games against Genoa, including a 2-1 win earlier this season, and they should have enough quality to edge this clash.
Italian champions Napoli are top of the Serie A table after winning five out of six games so far this season. New signings Rasmus Højlund and Kevin De Bruyne are in fine form, and the squad looks strong. However, they need to keep winning, as their rivals are breathing down their necks. They should be able to pick up an away victory this weekend. Torino are winless at home this season, and they’ve been leaking goals. Napoli won 1-0 at this stadium last season, and they should be able to repeat the feat.
