San Jose State was a solid 7-6 last season considering they had a new coaching staff and ranked almost dead last in offensive returning production heading into the season. San Jose State brings back starting QB Walker Eget and starting RB Floyd Chalk. Central Michigan went 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS on the road last season and has a new coaching staff. This is the second year under coach Ken Niumatalolo and he has a fantastic QB in Walker Eget throwing behind a solid offensive line. Defensively, with six starters returning from a defense who stopped the run really well last season makes this a tough opening matchup for an offense in Central Michigan replacing a lot of productivity.

New Central Michigan coach Matt Drinkall was dealt a rough scheduling hand in his first season, beginning with a West Coast kickoff at 10:30 p.m. ET. (Further, the Chippewas open with three consecutive road games.) CMU also is breaking in two new coordinators. The Spartans went 5-2 SU at home a year ago, falling only to the top two Mountain West members (Boise State, UNLV) that combined for 25 victories. The conditions are ripe for a San Jose cover.
