I didn't play any Thursday college football games on the site (did a couple personally), and I need an early fix tonight while watching Western Michigan-Michigan State (not betting my alma maters), so let's do this in-state rivalry. I don't like the spread at all; if it were at its original open of 8.5, I'd take new Sun Belt member Old Dominion even though Sagarin has Tech by about 14 -- but at 6 guess I have to do the moneyline. It's the Tech head coaching debut of former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry, and he's good friends with ODU coach Ricky Rahne as they spent several seasons together at Vanderbilt and Penn State while serving under James Franklin. Tech's offense is a bit of a question mark with Marshall transfer Grant Wells as the new starting QB. He is, though, one of 13 returning FBS QBs who averaged at least 270 passing yards last season. I do think that Hokies defense will be quite good from the get go and their roster is clearly better overall than Little Brother ODU. The Monarchs are 1-12 vs. Power 5 schools all-time -- that win was in Norfolk over Virginia Tech in 2018, so there's no way the Hokies look past this game.
