Jets vs. Patriots NFL Week 3 odds, props, trends: Zach Wilson has league's lowest passing yardage total Sunday, but New York not favored as lowest-scoring team
The last time the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots was late in the 2015 season. The average gas price in the USA was $2 and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning was in his final NFL season. Considering Jets quarterback Zach Wilson's pro performance and his past against the Pats, that streak may not be ending Sunday at MetLife Stadium with New York +2.5 on the SportsLine consensus.
In a minor surprise, Wilson does not have the lowest over/under passing yardage total of any QB on Sunday per DraftKings, and the Jets in another minor surprise aren't favored to be the lowest-scoring team.
(A quick aside: Weather could be an issue Sunday because Tropical Storm Ophelia is currently on track to hit the Northeast on Sunday and could also affect Bills-Commanders and Colts-Ravens. The forecast for East Rutherford from Weather.com: Potential for heavy rainfall. High 64F. Winds NE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 70%. Rainfall around a quarter of an inch. The total has dropped from an open of 38 to 36.5.)
New England's 14-game winning streak against the Jets is the second-longest active steak by any team against another behind Kansas City's 15-game run vs. Denver. The Patriots' +257 point differential is the largest in any NFL matchup in any seven-year span this century.
In that skid, New York has 68 total punts, 33 giveaways and just 28 scoring drives, ending in 14 touchdowns and 14 field goals for an average of 10.0 offensive points per game. The Jets have started seven quarterbacks in that stretch, many more forgettable than the previous one.
Wilson is 0-4 in the series and has thrown for less than 80 yards twice. Perhaps the ugliest game of the entire 2022 season was New York's 10-3 loss at New England in Week 11. Wilson was an incredibly bad 9-for-22 for 77 yards while being sacked four times, although he at least wasn't picked off. The Pats won on a 84-yard punt return TD by Marcus Jones with five seconds left.
Reporters memorably asked Wilson afterward if he felt he let the defense down by playing so badly, to which he answered "No." That led to a firestorm of criticism and frankly might have been the start of the Jets' offseason plans to upgrade at the position. We all know what happened with Aaron Rodgers.
In Week 2, the Jets were favored to be the NFL's lowest-scoring team among Sunday's games and did their part in a 30-10 loss in Dallas – but Jacksonville ended up as the lowest-scoring team with nine points in ots loss to Kansas City. Wilson dropped to 8-15 as a starter and completed just 12 of 27 for 170 yards, a TD and three picks. His season rating of a 55.3 is easily the league's worst.
For Sunday, Wilson is set at over/under 181.5 passing yards, which is the fewest of any Sunday QB. New England is allowing 199.0 yards per game, but faced two much better QBs in Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts and Miami's Tua Tagovailoa.
Arizona is the +700 favorite to be the lowest-scoring team in Week 3 as it hosts the Cowboys, who lost Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs to a season-ending injury Thursday. Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs is right behind Wilson at O/U 182.5 yards.
Houston is next at +800 as its visits the Jaguars, followed by the Jets at +850. On the lowest-scoring game odds, Pats-Jets is the +350 leader.
