2023 NCAA Tournament odds, bracketology: Led by Max Abmas, red-hot Oral Roberts clinches Summit League title but still long shot for Final Four
Red-hot Oral Roberts is the first conference champion in college basketball.
Oral Roberts improved to 15-0 in the Summit League and clinched the Summit League title with a 73-70 win over North Dakota on Thursday, making the school the second of an eventual 32 regular-season conference champions in college basketball. It's the first regular-season championship for the program since 2011-12. Despite having one of the nation's top players in Max Abmas, however, the Golden Eagles are +10000 long shots at DraftKings to reach the Final Four of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Don't completely rule out a trip to the national semifinals in Houston, though. This year's Oral Roberts club is way better than the 2020-21 club that upset No. 2 seed Ohio State and then No. 7 Florida in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament before losing to No. 3 Arkansas in the Sweet 16. Abmas became a bit of a national name in that Big Dance. The team's other marquee player then was Kevin Obanor, who is now with Texas Tech.
Abmas is third in the in the nation in scoring at 22.6 points per game and has scored 2,430 career points, which puts him fourth all-time in Summit League history, and his 401 career 3-pointers made are No. 1.
Oral Roberts (24-4) has won 21 of its past 22 games and is one of two schools nationally still undefeated in conference play. The other is Eastern Washington in the Big Sky, and the Eagles could wrap up that regular-season title Saturday. Oral Roberts' 11-game winning streak overall is second in the country to EWU's 16 in a row. Colgate was the first regular-season champion, clinching the Patriot League last weekend.
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has ORU as a No. 11 seed in the South Region and opening against No. 6 Creighton. ESPN forecasts Oral Roberts a No. 12 seed in the West, and also matches the Golden Eagles with Creighton (as a No. 5).
Would Oral Roberts get an at-large bid if it lost in the Summit League Tournament? It has an NCAA NET ranking of 43, ahead of the likes of North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Oregon, Florida, USC and Penn State.
The Golden Eagles' four losses all came on the road against very good teams: Saint Mary's, Houston, Utah State and New Mexico. The first two for sure will be in the NCAA Tournament. Both USU and New Mexico will be 20-win teams but would likely would have to win the Mountain West Tournament to get in. The best non-conference win was over ASUN contender Liberty. Power 5 schools won't schedule Oral Roberts.
Abmas and others will be honored on Senior Night on Saturday when Oral Roberts concludes its home slate against North Dakota State. The Summit League Tournament starts March 3 in Sioux Falls, SD.
