Islanders vs. Flyers Monday NHL odds, props: Bo Horvat +140 to score goal in New York debut

While the NBA's trade deadline comes before its All-Star break, the NHL's comes well after its break: March 3, to be exact. Thus, there's no sense of urgency for surefire Stanley Cup contenders to add pieces quite yet, but the New York Islanders are only on the precipice of playoff contention. They thus felt compelled to make an early move, landing All-Star forward Bo Horvat from Vancouver. Horvat will make his Islanders debut Monday in Philadelphia. He is +140 for an anytime goal and New York is a short favorite on the moneyline.

Last week, the Islanders sent forwards Anthony Beauvillier and Aatu Raty and a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft to Vancouver for the 31-year-old Horvat, who had 31 goals (tying a career high) and 23 assists with a plus-three rating with the Canucks.

Horvat's 11 power-play goals this season were a big reason for the deal, as the Isles are tied for last in the NHL with a power-play conversion rate of just 15.5%. For comparison, the Edmonton Oilers lead the league at 32.0%. Horvat also is second in the NHL in faceoffs taken (1,116) and is averaging a win percentage of 56%. The 25-year-old Beauvillier had 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 49 games this season with New York, and the 20-year-old Raty two goals in 12 games. He was a 2021 second-round pick.

The Islanders come out of the break with 57 points, two behind Pittsburgh for the East's final Wild Card spot, but Buffalo (56 points), Florida (54), and maybe Ottawa (51) and Philadelphia (51) are in the mix. DraftKings gives New York an updated season points total of 89.5. The Islanders are +300 to make the playoffs and -400 to miss.

Horvat played in Saturday's NHL All-Star Game as a member of the Islanders, but for his former Pacific Division because it would have been too complicated to shift Horvat to the Islanders' Metropolitan Division.

The Canucks are in full tank mode -- they aren't done trading -- and did well considering Horvat is in the final season of a six-year, $33 million contract he signed with the team on Sept. 8, 2017. He's set for free agency, but the Islanders already have agreed to an eight-year extension worth a reported $8.5 million per year.

Horvat wore 53 with Vancouver, but Casey Cizikas already owned No. 53 in New York so Horvat will wear 14: "The best way I can describe it is: four plus one is five and four minus one is three. So that's what I'm going with right there."

New York might get defenseman Noah Dobson (10G, 17A) back on Monday. He has been out since Jan. 21 with an upper-body injury. The Islanders and Flyers have split two meetings this season, each winning by multiple goals at home. Philadelphia is 10-12-2 on home ice and winless in its past three there.
