Super Bowl 55 Chiefs vs. Bucs odds, props, trends: Longest touchdown play set at 44.5 yards; recent game history says bet under total
Always a popular prop wager in any Super Bowl is the length of the game's longest touchdown, and William Hill Sportsbook has set an Over/Under of 44.5 yards for Sunday's Super Bowl 55 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and shown on CBS. The Bucs remain 3-point underdogs ,and at this point it's unlikely that spread changes.
Both the Over and Under 44.5 yards are priced at -110 (i.e., wager $110 to win $100). Kansas City has one of the biggest-play threats in the NFL in Tyreek Hill, and he's capable of going 90 yards at any time. When the Chiefs won 27-24 in Tampa in Week 12, Hill had three TD catches, including one of 75 yards. No other TDs in that game were longer than the 44.5 number for Super Bowl 55 (Hill had another for 44 yards and his third was 20).
Kansas City's longest touchdown play in its two playoff games has been, rather shockingly, only a 20-yard TD pass from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce in the divisional round vs. Cleveland. Hill hasn't scored yet.
Bucs coach Bruce Arians loves throwing deep downfield, and Tom Brady led all qualified quarterbacks this season in air yard per attempt at 9.6. Tampa Bay's longest TD play in three playoff games was Brady's shocking 39-yard pass to Scotty Miller at the end of the first half vs. Green Bay in the NFC title game.
Needless to say, any kickoff return for a touchdown is going to be longer than 44.5 yards, but almost all kickoffs are touchbacks these days. Punt returns for TDs are incredibly rare.
In five of the past six Super Bowls, the longest touchdown play was Under 44.5 yards; it was a 38-yard run by Damien Williams last year to make the final score Kansas City 31, San Francisco 20. The most recent Super Bowl with a TD Over 44.5 yards was on a defensive play: In Super Bowl 51, the Falcons' Robert Alford returned a Brady interception 82 yards for a score and 21-0 second-quarter lead over New England. Of course, the Falcons would blow that game (still the only Super Bowl OT).Â
Either defensive or special teams touchdowns have accounted for the longest TD in five of the past 11 Super Bowls. Kansas City is the -150 favorite to have the longest touchdown Sunday with Tampa Bay at +130.Â
