Next Raiders coach odds: Rich Bisaccia do enough to earn full-time job? Las Vegas likely will try for Jim Harbaugh

How big of a swing will Raiders owner Mark Davis take in his search for a new head coach?

Long-time NFL assistant coach Rich Bisaccia did about as good of a job on an interim head coaching basis with the Las Vegas Raiders as team owner Mark Davis could have hoped for after taking over in the wake of the failed Jon Gruden experiment and with two former first-round picks released because of their off-the-field issues. SportsLine oddsmakers slightly favor Bisaccia to get the full-time job, but it may depend on whether a few bigger names turn Davis down.

Reading the reports out of Vegas, the media there expects Davis to at least attempt a big swing like Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, Stanford's David Shaw or even Clemson's Dabo Swinney because Davis took a big swing with his initial hiring of Gruden and even went a bit outside the box in hiring Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon to coach the Las Vegas Aces WNBA team, which Davis also owns.

Harbaugh really hasn't put an end to the speculation that he may return to the NFL and he has a connection to the Raiders in serving as their quarterbacks coach in 2002 and 2003. He also played for the Chicago Bears and they surely would like to hire him, too.

It's no secret that the Raiders have made overtures in the past to Stanford's Shaw, who perhaps might finally be ready to leave the Cardinal as they've fallen on some hard times with stringent academic requirements obviously hampering who Shaw can recruit.

Would Swinney really leave Clemson? That seems unlikely – so what if he recently showed up at Allegiant Stadium for a Raiders game? Among the hot NFL coordinators out there, the one most linked to the Raiders has been Bucs OC Byron Leftwich, but he might be the favorite in Jacksonville. Or the Raiders could help weaken the AFC West rival Chiefs by hiring OC Eric Bieniemy.

Some believe that the Raiders job is the best one open because they have the best quarterback (at least today) of any team needing a head coach in Derek Carr, although he had a crushing late interception in the Wild-Card loss in Cincinnati.

Carr will be entering the final year of his five-year, $125 million extension. The Raiders are still one of the NFL's most popular franchises and play in a sparkling new stadium. Oh, and it will not be hard to sign free agents with the allure of Vegas and no state income tax in Nevada.

"We all think he is the right guy," Carr said of Bisaccia after the playoff loss. "Not just players, not just one side, but everybody. People listen to him, and not just people, but our team listens to him. I love him so much and I'm thankful for him. All those things will be decisions that I don't get to make. I just play quarterback. … We'll see what happens. We all know what we want to have happen."

Bisaccia, who had been the Raiders' special teams coach, will get an interview with Davis and the Raiders must conduct a full search before deciding on a new coach to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Davis may have to hire a GM first because on Monday, the Raiders fired GM Mike Mayock. Gruden brought Mayock in to replace Reggie McKenzie following the 2018 season.
