The last time the Green Bay Packers replaced a legend as the team's starting quarterback it worked out quite well, with Aaron Rodgers supplanting Brett Favre in 2008. Now Rodgers is with the New York Jets, and Jordan Love is set to become just the third different Packers QB to start a season opener over the past 30 years. His season totals have been released: over/under 3,400.5 passing yards, 22.5 touchdown passes and 13.5 interceptions. Love is +5000 at Caesars Sportsbook to follow in Favre's and Rodgers' footsteps and win MVP.

Tuesday was the deadline for teams to decide whether to pick up rookie fifth-year options on players drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Packers infamously angered Rodgers by trading up to the No. 26 pick in 2020, not to get Rodgers help at receiver, but instead to take Love out of Utah State. Rather than technically exercising Love's option, they gave him a one-year extension that includes $13.5 million in guaranteed money for 2024 and can be worth up to $22.5 million if he hits every incentive. That's $2.23 million more than he could have made with the fifth-year option.

Love's lone regular-season start came in Week 9 of the 2021 season in Kansas City when Rodgers was out with COVID. In the 13-7 loss, Love was 19-for-34 for 190 yards with a TD and a pick.

Overall in 10 games, with the rest of his appearances coming in mop-up duty or after an injury, Love is 50-for-83 for 606 yards, three TDs and three picks – good for a rating of 79.7 that would have ranked 31st in the NFL last year, ahead of only Baker Mayfield, Davis Mills, Kenny Pickett and Zach Wilson. Two of them -- Mills and Wilson -- won't be starters in 2023.

Rodgers threw for 4,038 yards, 28 touchdowns and 13 picks in 16 games in his first year as a starter in 2008. His totals for this year in New York are: O/U 3,800.5 yards, 29.5 TDs and 8.5 picks.

Green Bay is extremely young at receiver, with the team's top three wideouts projected to be second-year players Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs and rookie second-round pick Jayden Reed. The Packers could run the ball more often this year behind their excellent 1-2 punch of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

The Packers have a win total of 7.5; they were 6-10 in Rodgers' first year. The full 2023 NFL schedule will be released next week. Based on 2023 win total projections, the Packers project to have the 11th-easiest NFL schedule.
