Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley latest NFL star to opt out

The Jets' defense just took another big hit.

The New York Jets had high hopes for 2020 after winning six of their final eight games last season, but now their defense has taken a second big hit in as many weeks: Four-time Pro Bowler C.J. Mosley has opted out due to family health concerns.

Mosley's announcement follows the Jets' trade of All-Pro safety Jamal Adams.

Mosley played in just two games last year due to a groin injury, but in the five previous seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, the inside linebacker made second-team All Pro four times. In his career, the 28-year-old Alabama product has 10 interceptions, 8.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and 588 tackles.

The Jets are tied with Miami at +750 odds to win the AFC East at William Hill, well behind +125 co-favorites New England and Buffalo. On the Super Bowl odds board, the Jets are +10,000, ahead of only Carolina, Cincinnati, Jacksonville and Washington.

William Hill has the Jets' win total at 6.5, the Under a -130 favorite.

Mosley and Carolina's Luke Kuechly (now retired) were the only two NFL players with 500 tackles, eight sacks and eight interceptions since 2014 when Mosley entered the league. Without Mosley, the Jets could turn to James Burgess, Patrick Onwuasor or Neville Hewitt.

CBS Sports is tracking every player who has opted out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, a list that includes Super Bowl hero Damien Williams.
