Chicago Bears NFL Week 5 odds: David Montgomery to miss time but reportedly not out for season; Damien Williams next man up if healthy
The Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions on Sunday – the sad-sack Lions are the one team the Bears can annually beat under Matt Nagy – to improve to 2-2, but it may have been costly as No. 1 running back David Montgomery is expected to miss some time with a knee injury. However, it is not believed to be a season-ending torn ACL, although official word will come later Monday. Expect backup Damien Williams to be one of the most popular Fantasy Football pickups this week.
In the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-14 win, Montgomery ran off left guard for a five-yard gain but stayed on the ground and clutched his left knee in pain after the play ended. He would be helped off the field.
"As soon as he got tackled and I saw his facial expression and heard him, I was waving my hand for the trainers to come over as fast as they can," Bears receiver Darnell Mooney said.
Montgomery finished with 108 yards and a TD on 16 carries and has 69 carries for 309 yards and three scores on the season with six catches for 49 yards. He has been easily the team's best offensive player.
According to multiple reports, it is thought that Montgomery suffered a hyperextended knee but not a torn ACL. The former Iowa State star tweeted this after the game: "YOU ARE AN AWESOME GOD !!!" The presumption there being that Montgomery got initial good news. The team does not plan to offer an update about the health of Montgomery until after Wednesday's first official practice of the week.
Back in March, the Bears signed Williams to a one-year deal. You may remember he was terrific for Kansas City in the Super Bowl LIV victory over San Francisco – a case could certainly be made that Williams should have won game MVP honors. He opted out of the 2020 season.
It's no sure thing that Williams will be able to take over right away because Nagy said he hurt his quad during Sunday's win. Williams had 55 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Khalil Herbert is the only other running back on the 53-man roster. The sixth-round rookie from Virginia Tech has three carries for seven yards. Expect to see Ryan Nall elevated from the practice squad at some point this week.
Chicago is a 4.5-point underdog for Week 5 in its first-ever trip to Las Vegas – that spread could change depending on what the Raiders do tonight at the Chargers. Nagy would not say that rookie QB Justin Fields (11-for-17, 209 yards, 1 INT) would remain his starter if Andy Dalton is healthy enough to play. Dalton was inactive for a second straight game due to a knee injury. No one actually believes Dalton will start again but that would be typical Nagy.
"We've gotta see where Andy's at health-wise," the coach said Monday. "When Andy's healthy, he's our starter. … Honestly the next two days will be revealing to us."
