2021 NFL Draft order, odds: Cowboys vs. Bengals loser in good spot for No. 3 overall draft pick, chance to select Penei Sewell

The Dallas at Cincinnati game Sunday could have major 2021 NFL Draft ramifications.

Arguably the most meaningless Week 14 NFL game from an on-the-field perspective is Sunday's Dallas (3-9) at Cincinnati (2-9-1) matchup, but the loser could be the big winner when it comes to the 2021 NFL Draft as it would be in the driver's seat for the third overall pick and the chance to pick by far the best offensive line prospect in Oregon tackle Penei Sewell. The Cowboys are 3.5-point favorites on the William Hill Sportsbook NFL odds. Yes, a three-win road team with a historically bad 2-10 against the spread record is more than a field goal favorite.

Both these teams stink for a multitude of reasons, including that each lost its starting quarterback to a season-ending injury – although neither club was very good when the starter was healthy. No question that one major reason has also been terrible offensive line play on each. The Bengals' unit is simply bad, while the Cowboys' group has been destroyed by injuries and a couple of those guys could be past their prime regardless (and hugely overpaid).

Long story short: Both teams BADLY need offensive line help this offseason.

Thus, assuming that the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars pick 1-2 in whichever order in the 2020 NFL Draft and take Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, the draft really starts at No. 3. On the CBS Sports Big Board, Oregon's Sewell – who chose to opt-out of this college football season – is ranked No. 3, and he's considered the best offensive line prospect to enter the NFL in years.

In his 2019 sophomore season, Sewell finished as the top-graded offensive lineman in Pro Football Focus history, was a unanimous first-team All-American, Outland Trophy winner and co-Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. Sewell allowed all of one sack in 1,376 career snaps.

The No. 3 pick is almost surely going to come down to Cincinnati, Dallas, the LA Chargers (3-9) and Philadelphia (3-8-1). Obviously, the worst record is the No. 1 tiebreaker, while No. 2 would be strength of schedule. In this case, having the easier strength of schedule is better. The Chargers "win" that tiebreaker over the Cowboys currently and L.A. would pick fourth with Dallas fifth and Philadelphia sixth as things stand now.

One on-field storyline is the return of Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton to Cincinnati. The "Red Rifle" spent 10 mostly successful seasons with the Bengals as a second-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and left holding most career franchise passing records.

The Cowboys' 2-10 against the spread record is tied for the worst through 12 games over the last 40 seasons. The Bengals are a very respectable 7-5 ATS and have covered four straight at home.
