With extra rest and one of the league's best defenses, the Steelers should roll over the Eagles by the time this game gets late in the second half. Carson Wentz has been a turnover machine this season, and that will not change against this Pittsburgh team. Ben Roethlisberger has been efficient and effective, throwing seven touchdowns to one interception, and James Conner is looking for this third-straight 100-yard game as the Steelers' running game has been operating on all cylinders. I don't love this game at more than a touchdown, and I do expect the line to go up. So be sure to get it here as I have Pittsburgh as eight-point favorites.
The Steelers were off last week because their opponent, Tennessee, had positive COVID-19 tests. Pittsburgh is well-rested with no travel and maybe a day or two of extra practice. I had Philadelphia plus the points against San Francisco last week. The Eagles still have numerous injuries and have lost the turnover battle in all four contests this year. The Steelers should dominate this in-state rivalry game.
Pittsburgh's outstanding defense has the ability to put pressure on Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. The Steelers rank second in the league with 15 sacks (just two behind the Eagles who have played one more game) and have 29 tackles for loss. Each one of those stats projected over the season would be NFL records. And Wentz doesn’t do well when under pressure. So far this season he has a passer rating of 28.0 when pressured. That ranks 37th out of 40 quarterbacks who have attempted at least five passes under pressure. My model says the Steelers cover almost 60 percent of the time, so you're getting strong value at this number.
I’m backing the Eagles for more reasons than just the fact that several key injured players should be able to Sunday. It’s because Carson Wentz took control of the team and put it on his back at San Francisco no matter how bad his receiving corps was. He ran for first downs, taking no chances. I look for the Eagles and a defense that leads NFL with 17 sacks to give the Steelers all they can handle and get the cover, possibly win, as the Steelers had their most inconvenient bye last week.
The Eagles were fortunate to face Nick Mullens last week, but now they're on the road again versus the rested Steelers. Pittsburgh will force Carson Wentz into multiple key mistakes. Lay it.
Look at their defensive stats. The Steelers are No. 1 in so many categories. And their running game is strong; they can play keepaway. And, they're fresh after last week's game with Tennessee was postponed. Lay it.
