Rockies vs. Reds MLB probable pitchers, odds, props: Rookie Andrew Abbott yet to allow earned run, Cincinnati its biggest favorite in 2 years on 10-game win streak
We will stop writing about Cincinnati rookie left-hander Andrew Abbott once he stops making history. The 24-year-old has yet to allow an earned run over his first three starts and returns to the bump Wednesday at home as the scorching-hot Reds look to complete a three-game sweep of Colorado. Abbott is set at over/under 2.5 earned runs allowed at Caesars Sportsbook and the Reds are whopping -260 favorites as they try to win an 11th straight game. They haven't been favored this heavily since August 2021.
Cincinnati's 10-game winning streak is tied for the third-longest by a team to lose 100 games the previous season in MLB history. The 1890 Louisville Colonels hold the mark of 12 straight. The Reds have had 17 streaks of 10 or more consecutive wins since 1895. They last won 11 straight in 1940, a year in which they won the World Series.
This current run is the club's longest streak since 2012, which is also the last time the Reds won the National League Central. Milwaukee remains the -110 favorite to win the division, with Cincinnati at +390.
As for Abbott, here are his three big-league outings, all victories, since being called up from Triple-A Louisville:
- June 16 at Astros – Six shutout innings, four hits allowed, two strikeouts, two walks.
- June 10 at Cardinals – 5.2 shutout innings, five hits allowed, four strikeouts, three walks,.
- June 5 vs. Brewers – Six shutout innings in MLB debut, one hit allowed, six strikeouts, four walks.
Those are three pretty good opponents. As you can see, Abbott hasn't exactly been overpowering with just 12 strikeouts and nine walks in his 17.2 innings, but he isn't a fireballer. Despite, that, he is the first pitcher since the mound was set to its current distance in 1893 with at least five scoreless innings in each of his first three games.
Abbott's 17.2 scoreless innings to start his career has broken the franchise record of 15 held by Wayne Simpson in 1970. Simpson finished 14-3 with a 3.02 ERA that year, was an All-Star and fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.
In the Expansion Era (since 1961), Abbott's 17.2-inning scoreless streak to begin his career is tied for the 16th-longest such streak among all MLB pitchers. Oakland's Brad Ziegler ranks first on that list, with 39.0 scoreless innings to begin his career in 2008. Also in the Expansion Era, Abbot's scoreless streak to begin his career is tied for the fourth-longest such streak ever among starting pitchers. The Yankees' Luis Gil holds the mark at 18.2 IP.
Needless to say, Abbott hasn't faced Colorado in a game that counted. He's still a +5500 longshot at DraftKings to win NL Rookie of the Year. Arizona's Corbin Carroll (-500) is running away with that.
Connor Seabold (1-3, 5.88) starts for Colorado. Kyle Freeland was originally scheduled to start, but he has been pushed back again to Friday. Seabold was roughed up for nine runs over three inning last time out by the Rays but had been pretty solid otherwise in his third big-league season and first in the NL. Seabold took a home no-decision vs. the Reds on May 15, allowing six runs in 4.1 innings.
