Jacob DeGrom can set Mets record for consecutive scoreless innings Wednesday vs. Red Sox

Mets two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom hasn't given up a run in many months.

The New York Mets continue their four-game interleague series against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday with it shifting to Citi Field, and the Mets opened as heavy -190 favorites on the William Hill MLB odds because ace and two-time National League Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom is on the mound as he looks to break another franchise record. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.

Obviously, the Mets have had some incredible pitchers in franchise history, including the likes of Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Dwight Gooden. Yet the team record for consecutive scoreless innings is held by … knuckleballer R.A. Dickey? He had 32.2 scoreless innings in a row in his unlikely run to the NL Cy Young Award in 2012.

DeGrom carries a streak of 28 straight scoreless innings into Wednesday. Twenty-three of those were to close last season as he repeated as the Cy Young winner – and is the betting favorite for a third at William Hill – and then the right-hander threw five more scoreless last Friday at home in a no-decision vs. Atlanta. He allowed just one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Manager Luis Rojas pulled his guy after just 72 pitches, surely because deGrom had some back tightness earlier in Summer Camp. In theory, deGrom should be allowed to hit around 90 this time.

DeGrom last allowed an earned run on Sept. 9, 2019, when he gave up all of one over seven innings in a win over Arizona. He hasn't personally lost a start since Sept. 3, 2018, at the Washington Nationals.

The 28-inning scoreless streak is a career high and easily the longest in the majors currently, but deGrom has a long way to go to reach the MLB record of 59 set by the Dodgers' Orel Hershiser in 1988 when he won the Cy Young. Hershiser unofficially extended his streak to 67 in Game 1 of the NLCS, but playoffs don't count. Hershiser allowed a run in the first inning of his 1989 season debut against the Reds.

Boston counters with hard-throwing but wild right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 1.50). He held the terrible Orioles to one run over six innings on Opening Day.
