Brewers vs. Mets Monday MLB probable pitchers, odds: Justin Verlander can tie former Met Bartolo Colon on all-time wins list
While the body types and MLB careers of Justin Verlander and Bartolo Colon couldn't be much different, Verlander can tie the former New York Met Colon and Jack Quinn among the 50 winningest pitchers of all time if Verlander and the Mets can beat the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. New York is -178 at Caesars Sportsbook.
Verlander will go down as an all-time great with his three Cy Young Awards, 2011 AL MVP, 2011 AL Pitching Triple Crown, three no-hitters, two World Series rings and AL Rookie of the Year Award, among others. He's a first-ballot, no-doubt Hall of Famer and looks to tie Colon and Quinn for 50th all-time in wins with 247. Next up on the wins list would be Vic Willis with 249.Â
The 40-year-old Verlander might be beginning to show his age. He's 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA, and the Mets are 3-6 in games he's started. The right-hander has tended to alternate good starts with bad, and he wasn't great last time out in allowing four runs over seven innings in a loss in Houston. After allowing six runs over five innings in his Citi Field debut on May 16 vs. Tampa Bay, Verlander has pitched to a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20.0 IP) over his last three home starts.
This is Verlander's first season in the National League so he has only three career starts against the Brewers. He's 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA and last saw them in 2019 while with Houston. Verlander is +110 to record a win Monday, with No at -150.Â
At 6-15, the Mets are tied for the worst record in the NL this month and their minus-35 run differential in the first inning this season is the worst in the majors. On the bright side, Francisco Lindor might be heating up. He has eight hits in his last seven games, including three homers, after recording just one hit in the prior six games. Lindor is one homer away from the 200th in his career and is +370 to go yard on Monday.
Dating back to last season, the Brewers have won four straight against the Mets. Milwaukee will start Colin Rea (3-4, 4.88 ERA), his 40th career start and 50th career game. Rea has allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts and at least three runs in four of his five starts on the road.
No current Met has more than three at-bats against the journeyman. His only outing against the Mets came way back in 2016 at Petco Park while Rea was with the Padres. The Brewers are 12-4 (.750) in one-run games. The Marlins (19-5, .792) are the only MLB team with a better mark.
