Young Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. could be at risk of a hit-by-pitch Tuesday vs. Rangers

San Diego star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. broke an "unwritten" MLB rule on Monday.

The big story in baseball at this moment is what happened Monday night in the San Diego Padres' 14-4 win at the Texas Rangers to end a five-game losing streak. With San Diego leading 10-3 in the top of the eighth inning, Padres young superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was up with the bases loaded and a 3-0 count. By the "unwritten" rules of baseball, Tatis Jr. was supposed to take the next pitch. He was told to by the third-base coach but missed the sign and swung away, hitting a grand slam.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward was not happy with that: "I didn't like it personally. You're up by 7 in the 8th inning, it's typically not a good time 3-0. It's kind of the way we were all raised in the game. But ... the norms are being challenged."

Even Tatis' own manager Jayce Tingler -- who spent the previous 13 years as a coach with the Rangers -- was critical of swinging away there, saying: "He's young, a free spirit and focused and all those things. That's the last thing that we'll ever take away. It's a learning opportunity and that's it. He'll grow from it. … A lot of our guys have green light 3-0. But in this game in particular, we had a little bit of a comfortable lead. We're not trying to run up the score or anything like that."

1) Keep swinging 3-0 if you want to, no matter what the game situation is

2) Keep hitting homers, no matter what the situation is

3) Keep bringing energy and flash to baseball and making it fun

4) The only thing you did wrong was apologize. Stop that.

Tatis had two homers and seven RBIs in the game and at 21 years and 228 days Monday was the youngest player in baseball with a seven-RBI game since Ron Santo in 1961. Tatis leads the majors with 11 homers and 28 RBIs and became the fastest Padres hitter to reach 10 dingers in a season, doing it in 24 team games. Tatis' 11 homers are the most ever by any player age 21 or younger in his team's first 25 games of a season. Mel Ott held the record with 10 in 1929.

The Rangers did throw behind the next Padres hitter, Manny Machado, following Tatis' slam and the question is whether they may try to plunk Tatis Jr. on Tuesday considering he never came up again Monday. Or whether the Padres try for their own payback on a Texas hitter. The umpires likely will issue pre-game warnings to both sides.

The Padres are short favorites Tuesday on the MLB odds with a 4:05 p.m. ET start in Arlington.
