If you rolled out of bed Sunday morning and turned on NFL Network, you witnessed a rarity in the eventful life of quarterbacks. Needing a touchdown on its final series, New England yanked its seasoned starter and replaced him with a second-year player whose body of work — two mop-up appearances— could fit on the coin from the pre-game flip.

Mac Jones was uninjured, aside from bruised confidence. He had just served up a horrendous interception in the red zone when a TD likely would have salvaged a win for the Patriots. Coach Bill Belichick had seen enough. In came Bailey Zappe, with 86 yards to navigate and 112 seconds to complete the journey.

Zappe, too, threw a pick, though he did channel Tom Brady on the play with a cool fake spike before the fateful pass. The final score in Frankfurt, where the soccer fans are accustomed to low scores: Indianapolis 10, New England 6.
