Travis Kelce 2023 NFL season props, odds: Chiefs All-Pro injures knee in practice, status unclear for Kickoff Game vs. Lions Thursday

Could Travis Kelce miss Thursday's opener for Kansas City?

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be without their best defensive player for Thursday's season-opening NFL Kickoff Game against the Detroit Lions in Chris Jones as he holds out, and they now might be without their best pass-catcher after tight end Travis Kelce injured his knee in practice Tuesday. His status for Thursday's game is uncertain. Kansas City has dropped from -6.5 to -5.5 per the SportsLine consensus and the total has fallen from 54.5 points to 53.5. Click here for expert picks.

Kelce, who will be 33 in October, comes off one of the best seasons in NFL history by a tight end. He finished with 110 catches for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns, all career highs. If Kelce couldn't win NFL Offensive Player of the Year with those numbers, then perhaps no tight end ever will. Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson was the 2022 winner and Kelce finished sixth. He was named to his eighth Pro Bowl and was a fourth-time first-team All-Pro (he's made second team three times).

His 814 career regular-season receptions are the most by any NFL tight end in his first 10 seasons. His 35 games of 100 yards receiving is the most by a tight end in league history and also a franchise record. Kelce's seven 1,000-yard seasons are an NFL record for a tight end, and they have been consecutive. His nine consecutive seasons with at least 50 catches is tied for the top spot with Buccaneers WR Mike Evans for the most consecutive seasons among all active pass catchers in the league.

Patrick Mahomes and Kelce have teamed up for 46 touchdowns, tied with Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson and WR Otis Taylor for most QB-pass catcher connections in Chiefs history. Kelce has caught a pass in 143 consecutive games, marking the longest streak in franchise history and two behind the Titans' DeAndre Hopkins for the longest active streak in the NFL.

Coach Andy Reid told reporters Kelce hyperextended his knee at practice and that he's now iffy for Thursday. "We'll just see how it goes," Reid said. Kelce has not missed a regular-season game due to injury since his 2013 rookie year when he played one snap on special teams and had microfracture surgery on his knee. Kelce has missed a couple of games since for rest and one due to COVID in 2021.

Here are Travis Kelce season props active at DraftKings:

  • To win NFL Offensive Player of the Year: +4000
  • To lead the NFL in receiving yards: +2200
  • To lead the NFL in receiving TDs: +500
  • To lead the NFL in receptions: +1200
  • Over/Under 1124.5 receiving yards: Both -110
  • Over/Under 9.5 receiving TDs: Both -110
  • Kelce to have most yards from scrimmage on Chiefs: -250
  • Kelce to have 15 receiving TDs: +275
  • Kelce to have 12 receiving TDs & Patrick Mahomes to throw for 5000 yards: +350

For what it's worth, Mahomes is 2-0 in his career without Kelce. Mahomes won in Denver on New Year's Eve 2017 in his first NFL start, and beat visiting Pittsburgh on Dec. 26, 2021. The SportsLine Model forecasts Kelce for 5.7 catches, 78 yards and 0.67 TDs on Thursday against Detroit. He is a -135 favorite at DraftKings for an anytime TD.
