Today's top picks: Mariners to continue win streak is among best bets, plus many more MLB picks for Saturday, July 16

SportsLine's proven experts share their favorite bets on the Early Edge podcast for Saturday, July 16

By@SportsLineUpdated: Jul 16, 2022 2:53PM UTC . 3 min read

Host Allan Bell is joined by Mike McClure and Micah Roberts on the Early Edge podcast, powered by SportsLine. Get highlighted plays for MLB for Saturday, July 16, and you can stream the show live every morning on the SportsLine YouTube page.

The crew runs down the storylines and trends, as well as Mike's weather update, and the expert says the Reds vs. Cardinals matchup in St. Louis could be a slugfest. The heat and low air density, combined with the wind blowing out, indicate a 25 percent increase for home runs and 20 percent for scoring.

Allan then offers up two SportsLine Plays of the Day, and the first is an MLB pick from Pirates vs. Rockies (3:10 p.m. ET). The SportsLine Projection Model is backing the Rockies -130, as Colorado has won five straight and crushed the Pirates 13-2 on Friday.

The second SportsLine play is also an MLB pick, and it is St. Louis -1.5 (+115) in the Reds vs. Cardinals game (2:15 p.m. ET). As McClure pointed out, there could be a lot of runs scored, and the model sees that benefitting the Cardinals. Cincinnati has won just three of its 15 Saturday games this season.

Mike also has a pick from that Cardinals game, but it's an MLB player prop. He is backing Paul Goldschmidt Over 1.5 Total Bases (-110), and he says there are many wagers you can make to take advantage of the conditions in St. Louis.

"I'm isolating Paul Goldschmidt, though" Mike says. "He crushes left-handed pitching. He is THE best player in Major League Baseball against lefties. An insane .552 against left-handed pitching." Reds lefty Nick Lodolo strikes out a lot of batters, but he also gives up home runs. McClure is expecting one from Goldschmidt, but he'll take it any way he can get it to cash this ticket.

Micah has two MLB picks, and the first is Seattle -140 in the Mariners vs. Rangers matchup (4:05 p.m. ET). The Mariners have won 12 in a row and have prevailed in 13 of right-hander Logan Gilbert's 18 starts this season. On the other side, Texas righty Spencer Howard has given up 12 runs over his three starts. "We gotta follow the streaks," Roberts says. "Mariners keep trucking, doing their thing."

Roberts also is backing an underdog, taking the White Sox +110 against the Twins (2:10 p.m. ET). Chicago starter Lance Lynn hasn't been good, but Micah likes the matchup of White Sox hitters against Minnesota righty Dylan Bundy. "This guy has been up and down all season long," the expert says. "And I think he's on his way down." The White Sox have won six of their last eight games.
