Today's sports betting picks: Why the Saints won't score much against the Bengals, plus more NFL best bets for Sunday, Oct. 16
The SportsLine crew shares its expert bets for Sunday, Oct. 16, on The Early Edge podcast
Jonathan Coachman is joined by sports betting experts Mike McClure, R.J. White and Larry Hartstein on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for the NFL for Sunday, Oct. 16.
McClure starts things off with a prop play. He likes Over 78.5 receiving yards for Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase (-115) in the Bengals-Saints game (1 p.m. ET). "We all know about Ja'Marr Chase and Joe Burrow returning to the Superdome for the first time since the 2020 National Championship Game. Had a lot of success there. It's an emotional spot," Mike says. "Ja'Marr Chase saw 12 targets last week, 16 in Week 1. We love that kind of upside in these situations. They haven't had real huge games since Week 1. However, this Saints defense is decimated. (It) made Geno Smith look really good last week. They haven't had a lot to offer in terms of resistance in the passing game."
White is up next with three plays. He starts with a teaser: The Chiefs (+.8.5) to cover against the Bills (4:25 p.m. ET) and the Seahawks (+8.5) to cover against the Cardinals (4:05 p.m. ET). "I think both these home dogs should be at least pick'em, if not favored in the case of Seattle," he says. "Kansas City is the second-best team in the league for me. Buffalo isn't that far ahead of them that they should be favored by 2.5 in Kansas City. On the Seattle side, they have the better quarterback, they have the better receivers, they have the better coaching staff and they have home field. I don't see how they're going to lose this game by 8.5, especially when they can cover through the back door with the way that Geno Smith is playing."
Next, he likes Under 20.5 points for the Saints (-120) against the Bengals. "New Orleans is down Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, Deonte Harty at receiver, and they're not expected to have Chris Olave," R.J. says. "That leaves Marquez Callaway, Tre'Quan Smith and practice-squaders at receiver. Cincy hasn't given up more than 20 points in regulation all year, I don't see how they start (here)."
White's final play is Under 26.5 points for the Rams (-115) versus the Panthers (4:05 p.m. ET). "The Rams' offense is 32nd in yards per play. They've scored 19 points in the last two games combined against two really good defenses," he says. "Carolina has had a pretty solid defense at times this year, and they're going to come out here with some defensive scheme changes after changing defensive coordinators. Only one of five games this year is Over 20 points for the Rams. Their offense looks awful right now. Cooper Kupp, Tyler Higbee, both questionable. They're expected to play, but they're not going to be 100%, so that reduces the scoring opportunities for the Rams even further to me."
Hartstein wraps things up with a five-pack of plays. The first is Over 60.5 receiving yards for Jacksonville's Christian Kirk (-115) in the Jaguars-Colts game (1 p.m. ET). "I love this guy coming off his worst game - one catch for 11 yards, two balls that were uncatchable from Trevor Lawrence. He had six (catches) for 78 (yards) and two touchdowns in the first matchup against the Colts," he says. "Marvin Jones, who had 11 targets last week, he is out for today, so we're talking about Christian Kirk and Zay Jones as the main target guys."
Larry's second play is Under 65.5 rushing and receiving yards for Green Bay's AJ Dillon (-115) in the Packers-Jets contest (1 p.m. ET). "The issue is that he just hasn't been efficient, averaging 3.9 yards a carry," he says. "Last week, we kind of saw the Packers' staff notice that, and they only gave AJ Dillon 20 snaps in that game against the Giants. The Jets have a very solid run defense, only giving up four yards a carry."
His next play is Over 26.5 rushing yards for Arizona's Kyler Murray (-110) in the Cardinals-Seahawks matchup. "I don't think he's going to do what Taysom Hill did to the Seahawks' defense, but this is the worst defense in football in yards per play, most rushing yards, so many categories," Hartstein says. "Kyler Murray can get this in one play. Last week, four (carries) for 42 (yards). I think it's a blow-up game for the Cardinals' offense."
Larry follows with Over 25.5 completions for Tampa Bay's Tom Brady (-114) in the Buccaneers-Steelers game (1 p.m. ET). "Look at his last three weeks - 39, 35, 31 when he started to get the receivers healthy," he says. "He is playing a Steelers defense that will not have Minkah Fitzpatrick, we know they still don't have TJ Watt to rush the passer and they're missing their top three cornerbacks."
Hartstein's final play is Over 7.5 receiving yards for San Francisco's Jeff Wilson (-120) in the 49ers-Falcons contest (1 p.m. ET). "He needs one catch to do this," he says. "The Falcons give up a ton to running backs. Leonard Fournette had 10 catches last week. We just need one catch. He's done this in four of the five games. Let's make it five out of six."
