Super Bowl 57 Chiefs vs. Eagles trends, odds: Patrick Mahomes facing passing yardage title, regular-season MVP and First-Team All-Pro curses

No quarterback has led the NFL in passing yards and then won the Super Bowl in the same season.

For the many decades that the NFL was a run-first league, this statistic would have made a lot of sense but with how pass-heavy it has become over the past two decades or so it's unbelievable: No quarterback has led the league in passing yards and won the Super Bowl in the same season. The vast majority of the time, that quarterback has failed to even make the game. That trend is staring the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes in the face Sunday in Super Bowl 57, as are unusual regular-season MVP and All-Pro trends with KC at +.1.5 against the Eagles.

Mahomes threw for a career-high 5,250 yards during the regular season for his first yardage title, easily beating out Justin Herbert (4,739) of the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes' total was the fourth largest in NFL history behind Peyton Manning's record of 5,477 in 2013, Drew Brees' 5,476 yards in 2011 and Tom Brady's 5,316 yards in 2021 with Tampa Bay. Manning and Brees put up their numbers during a 16-game schedule.

While Brady at least reached the playoffs in 2021, the three passing yardage leaders before him missed the playoffs entirely: Houston's Deshaun Watson (2020), Tampa Bay's Jameis Winston (2019) and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (2018). Prior to Mahomes, the last yardage king to reach the Super Bowl was Brady following the 2017 season with New England when the Patriots lost to Philadelphia.

Passing yardage leaders are 0-6 in the Super Bowl:

  • 2017 -- Brady's Patriots lost 41-33 to the Eagles
  • 2013 – Manning's Broncos lost 43-8 to the Seahawks
  • 2007 – Brady's unbeaten Patriots lost 17-14 to the Giants
  • 2002 -- Rich Gannon's Raiders lost 48-21 to the Bucs
  • 2001 -- Kurt Warner's Rams lost 20-17 to the Patriots
  • 1984 -- Dan Marino's Dolphins lost 38-16 to the 49ers

Mahomes was named MVP on Thursday and no regular-season MVP has won the Super Bowl this century. The last to do so was Warner following the 1999 season. Mahomes is the first to make it to the big game since Brady following the 2017 season.

Yet another trend against Mahomes: He was named First-Team All-Pro and Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts made the second team. This will be the seventh Super Bowl meeting between First- and Second-Team AP All-Pro quarterbacks all-time. The second-team pick won the previous six, last following the 2016 season when Brady's Patriots beat Matt Ryan's Atlanta Falcons.

At BetMGM, one of the most-wagered player props thus far is Mahomes Over 0.5 interceptions at +105. A whopping 99% of the action is on the Over. Mahomes had 12 regular-season picks but none in the playoffs yet. He has thrown two in each of his two Super Bowl appearances.
