Seahawks vs. Colts Week 1 NFL odds: Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson now trending toward playing as spread shifts back toward Indianapolis

Colts QB Carson Wentz and All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson apparently are fast healers.

No Week 1 NFL game has seen its spread pinball around more than the Seattle Seahawks at the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 12. The Colts were at one point 2.5-point favorites, but then the Seahawks got as high as -3.5 when news broke that Indianapolis likely was going to be without starting quarterback Carson Wentz and All-Pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson. However, now both are trending toward playing in the opener and Indy is down to a 1-point underdog at Caesars Sportsbook.

Both Wentz and Nelson had similar foot surgeries for a broken bone recently and the timetable for both was 5-12 weeks. The scuttlebutt was that Wentz might be on the long end of that because his foot issue dated back many years, while Nelson's was a new problem and he would be on the short end of the timetable.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen was the first to report Wednesday that both are "trending toward being available" for the opener against Seattle. Both already have returned to practice – not actually taking part yet – and neither was seen wearing a walking boot.

It benefits the Eagles quite a bit for Wentz to be ready in Week 1 as if he plays 75 percent of the Colts' offensive snaps this year or 70 percent of the snaps and Indy reaches the postseason, the second-round pick that Philadelphia received in return for Wentz will become a first rounder.

Wentz has been set at Over/Under 3750.5 passing yards this season, but that obviously will depend on his readiness for the opener. This news all but assures the Colts will not trade for Chicago backup QB Nick Foles.

Needless to say, neither Wentz nor Nelson is going to play in the preseason – Indy opens Sunday at home vs. Carolina. Jacob Eason will start that one with rookie sixth-rounder Sam Ehlinger also seeing plenty of time; they are neck-and-neck for the backup job as Ehlinger has closed the gap.

Indianapolis had been about even with Tennessee to win the AFC South at Caesars before the Wentz injury, but the book still has the Titans at -135 favorites and Colts at +170. Indy is set at Over/Under 9.5 wins.
