Russia's Daniil Medvedev will take over No. 1 ranking but not favored on tennis odds to win any Grand Slam tournament

There will be a new No. 1 in men's tennis on Monday.

The world rankings in tennis are updated every Monday and in the new rankings next week, Russia's Daniil Medvedev will take over the top spot for the first time in his career after current No. 1 Novak Djokovic was upset Thursday by qualifier and world No. 123 Jiri Vesely in the Dubai quarterfinals. Medvedev plays later this evening – still as world No. 2 – against Yoshihito Nishioka in Acapulco and that result won't affect his jump to No. 1.

Once Medvedev reached the quarterfinals of the Acapulco tournament, Djokovic had to reach the semifinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships if he wanted to stay at No. 1. But Vesely improved to 2-0 against Djokovic in his career, winning 6-4, 7-6(4). The Czech lefty previously defeated Djokovic at Monte Carlo in 2016. Djokovic, the 20-time major champion, had spent a record 361 weeks at No. 1 (not in a row).

"It is great for tennis to have someone new at world No. 1," Vesely said. "Novak is such a champion, he has been No. 1 for 361 weeks, but tennis needs new world No. 1s and there is a new generation coming up and I think it is great."

Medvedev will become the third Russian man to reach No. 1 in the ATP rankings, joining Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01). The 26-year-old will join Andy Murray (2016) as the only first-time world No. 1 since Djokovic first reached top spot in July 2011.

The last player outside the Big 4 of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal (who is also in the Acapulco tournament), Roger Federer (out injured) and Murray to reach No. 1 was American Andy Roddick on Feb. 1, 2004. No American man is reaching that spot again anytime soon.

Of course, Djokovic wasn't allowed to play in the Australian Open because he's not vaccinated and his status for the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open is up in the air – although many countries/cities are starting to eliminate vaccine mandates. Some books thus have futures on those tournaments up and some don't.

Nadal is the +100 favorite at DraftKings to win the French Open, a tournament he has absolutely dominated. Djokovic, the defending champion, is +225 and Medvedev only +1600. Medvedev hasn't been past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

Djokovic is the +110 favorite to win a fourth straight Wimbledon title – not counting the 2020 canceled event – with Medvedev a +550 second favorite. Medvedev's best result on the grass in London is the fourth round.

For the U.S. Open, Djokovic is the +125 favorite after losing in the final last year to Medvedev, which prevented Djokovic from the calendar-year Grand Slam. That is the only Grand Slam title for Medvedev, who is +275 to repeat. He was the runner-up to Nadal at this year's Australian Open, with the title being Nadal's record 21st in a Grand Slam to break a tie with Djokovic and Federer.

If you are wondering, Djokovic is 6-4 all-time vs. Medvedev. They have never met at the French Open or Wimbledon.
