Royals vs. Marlins Wednesday probable pitchers, odds: Jordan Lyles, MLB's biggest money loser for bettors, +245 to get first win of 2023

Jordan Lyles has been the worst pitcher in the majors and is back on the mound Wednesday in Miami.

We are now at the point where I'm going to have to preview every start made by struggling Kansas City Royals right-hander Jordan Lyles until he gets a win, sent to the bullpen or sets an unwanted MLB record. Lyles has been by far the biggest money-losing pitcher in the majors this year -- or money winner if you faded the Royals in each outing -- and takes the mound Wednesday in a series finale at Mimai. The Marlins are -180 at Caesars Sportsbook.

The 32-year-old Lyles is 0-9 with a 6.89 ERA (0-4 with a 9.89 ERA on the road) but deserved way better last Friday. He held Colorado to one run on two hits in five innings for a no-decision in Kansas City. It was just the second start of Lyles' 12 in which he allowed fewer than three runs. The Rockies scored in the top of the first, which has been an issue for Lyles. He has now given up runs in the first inning of 10 of 12 starts, totaling 15 runs.

"[Lyles] threw the ball great," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said after Friday's loss. "He's going to do his thing. He threw several really good changeups. Velo was up. I thought he worked the ball up and down the zone. It was a really positive outing."

It was Lyles' best outing of the year, but the Royals are now 0-12 when Lyles starts, and you would be down $1,200 if you bet $100 on them to win in each of his outings. No other pitcher this year is at minus-$900. It's just the seventh time in MLB history a team lost a pitcher's first 12 starts of a season.

It may not get better on Wednesday as Lyles has struggled on the road this season with a .287 opponents' batting average and six homers allowed. Overall, he has allowed an MLB-high 17 dingers. Lyles has a 5.22 ERA in 29.1 career innings vs. Miami. No current member of the Marlins has gone yard off.

Lyles is priced +245 to get a win at DraftKings and -360 to not record one. He's also set at over/under 3.5 strikeouts, 16.5 outs, 5.5 hits allowed, 1.5 walks allowed and 2.5 earned runs.

The Marlins counter with the talented but erratic Edward Cabrera (4-4, 4.50 ERA). He comes off his best start of the year, six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. Of course, the impressive effort came against the measly Oakland A's. Cabrera is 4-0 with a 2.77 ERA at home this year. He's +155 to record a win and has an O/U of 1.5 earned runs allowed.

Miami is trying for the sweep and a sixth straight win. The Marlins are 34-28 overall, the first time they've been six games over .500 since August 2016. They are 12-2 against the American League this year.

Luis Arraez had two hits in Tuesday's win to raise his major league-leading batting average to .401. The last player to hit .400 for a season was Ted Williams in 1941. Arraez is set at O/U 1.5 hits today with the Under a -178 favorite.
