Red Sox vs. Tigers Monday MLB injury report, odds, pick: Trevor Story out of lineup again for Boston, may miss series

Boston will be missing former All-Star Trevor Story for this evening's game in Detroit.

The Boston Red Sox's big offseason addition was signing former Colorado Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story to a six-year, $140 million contract, although to play second base. The Sox are 0-2 with Story in the lineup in the early going and 1-0 when he's not, but obviously the team is better with him in there. Story missed Sunday night's win at the Yankees with an illness and will not play this evening in Detroit, either. Boston is -120 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Story didn't even travel with the team to Motown so presumably he may miss the entire series, although it's not COVID but flu-like symptoms. He is 1-for-8 in his two games with a double. Sometimes it takes a while to get adjusted to a new league and pitchers you haven't seen before as Story had spent his entire career in the National League. Jonathan Arauz, who is nowhere near the hitter Story is, started Sunday's game at second and was 0-for-2 with an RBI. He should start tonight as well.

Sox closer Matt Barnes might be available. He has yet to pitch this season with a tight back. Barnes played catch before Sunday's game and Manager Alex Cora said he could be available to pitch Monday.

Boston will start new addition Michael Wacha on the mound in his team debut. The right-hander was 3-5 with a 5.05 ERA last year with Tampa Bay. His lone outing against the Tigers career was last September and he allowed one run in five innings of a no-decision.

Javy Baez has seen him the most of any Tigers player from their NL days with Baez going 6-for-21 with three doubles off Wacha. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera has 502 career homers, two shy of tying Eddie Murray for 27th all-time. Cabrera is 2-for-2 off Wacha but no homers. Miggy is 11 hits from 3,000.

It's Matt Manning on the mound for the Tigers. The 24-year-old touted prospect was 4-7 with a 5.80 ERA in 18 starts as a rookie last year. He didn't face Boston. The Tigers were 2-1 at Comerica Park vs. the Red Sox in 2021.

MLB free pick: Detroit on the runline.
