Raptors vs. 76ers Monday NBA injury report, Game 2 spread, odds: Scottie Barnes, Gary Trent, Thaddeus Young doubtful for Toronto

The Raptors could be extremely short-handed tonight in Game 2 of their series in Philadelphia.

The Toronto Raptors will catch a break in their Eastern Conference playoff series when it shifts north of the border because excellent Sixers defender Matisse Thybulle won't make the trip due to being unvaccinated for COVID. It sure looks like the Raptors will be down 2-0 in the series once it shifts locations, though, because they are listing starters Scottie Barnes and Gary Trent and key reserve Thaddeus Young all as doubtful for tonight's Game 2. The Sixers are up to 7.5-point favorites and that may only grow during the day. Click here for model picks.

Toronto was somewhat criticized for "reaching" for Barnes with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 draft over Gonzaga's Jalen Suggs, but that ended up being the right decision as Barnes is a Rookie of the Year finalist, although probably loses out to Cleveland's Evan Mobley. Barnes was the only NBA rookie this season and first in franchise history to record at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 250. The only other rookies to do that league-wide the past 20 years were Luka Doncic (2018-19), Ben Simmons (2017-18) and Blake Griffin (2010-11).

While the Raptors were routed in Game 1 on Saturday, 131-111, Barnes played well with 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists but accidentally had his foot stepped on by the rather large Joel Embiid in the fourth quarter and left. Barnes has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle, so it's hard to imagine he can play tonight. Update: Barnes is officially out.

Young left Saturday's game after just a few minutes in the second quarter and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the night with what has been diagnosed with a hyperextended left thumb. The Raptors got Young around the Trade Deadline from San Antonio and he played about 18 minutes per game. He is going to try and play with the thumb wrapped.

Trent has been dealing with a non-COVID illness and didn't look right Saturday in hitting 2-for-11 for nine points and a minus-23 rating in 26 minutes. He wasn't able to practice Sunday, either, but if there's one of the three who might be able to play tonight it's him. During the regular season, Trent ranked third in the NBA in steals per game, fifth in total deflections (237) and 17th in three-pointers made (209). He was not at shootaround this morning so that's not a good sign for his status.

What to expect from second-year 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey tonight? He blew up for 38 points in Game 1, including 21 in the third quarter. Maxey surpassed Maurice Cheeks as the youngest Sixer to ever record a 30-plus point playoff game. Maxey is set at Over/Under 18.5 points for this one.
