Rangers vs. Tigers Wednesday MLB injury report: Streaking Riley Greene out of lineup, placed on injured list

Tigers outfielder Riley Greene isn't starting Wednesday vs. Texas

As expected after being pulled from Tuesday's game, streaking Detroit Tigers center fielder Riley Greene is not in the lineup today against the visiting Texas Rangers, who go for the three-game sweep and are -160 at Caesars Sportsbook. Greene has landed on the 10-day injured list with a stress fracture of his left fibula. He's getting a second opinion to see how long he will be sidelined.

Greene was removed from Tuesday's game in the third inning with what the team described as left lower leg discomfort. Manager A.J. Hinch said Greene reported the discomfort in the first inning but argued to stay in the game. But Hinch didn't like the way he looked running down a fly ball and decided to take him out in the third inning.

Greene entered Tuesday having hit safely in 25 of his last 29 games, slashing .353/.423/.526 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBI in that span. Since April 26, Greene leads the American League and ranks fourth in the majors in batting average, while he ranks third in the AL and seventh in the big leagues in on-base percentage. On the season, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 draft is batting .296 with five homers, 18 RBI, an .805 OPS and six steals.

Because outfielder Matt Vierling was placed on the injured list before Tuesday's game, that left Greene and Akil Baddoo as the only two true outfielders on the roster, so shortstop Zack Short ended up moving to center field. Before today's game, the Tigers will activate outfielder Jake Marisnick, who they just acquired from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations.

It's struggling lefty Joey Wentz (1-5, 7.80 ERA) on the mound for Detroit. He has a 9.30 ERA in five outings this month but has never faced Texas. Marcus Semien carries a career-high 19-game hitting streak into Wednesday's action, tied for the longest active in the majors. He's hitting .313 with three homers, 16 RBI and 19 runs scored during the streak. Semien is set at over/under 1.5 hits today, with the Under a -248 favorite.

The Rangers counter with Dane Dunning (4-0, 1.67 ERA). His ERA is the lowest in MLB among pitchers with at least 43 innings pitched. He has the second-most innings (43.0) pitched of any MLB pitcher without allowing a HR in 2023. Dunning is 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 18.2 career innings vs. Detroit.
