PGA Tour: Consummate golf insider reveals 2020 Farmers Insurance Open picks

Sal Johnson nailed his season-ending Tour Championship picks, featuring winner Rory McIlroy, runner-up Xander Schauffele and third-place Brooks Koepka in his best bets. He was all over Justin Rose last year at Torrey Pines. Now, here are his picks for this week's Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Before you pick this week's Farmers Insurance Open, you NEED to see who Sal Johnson is backing. The golf media legend is coming off a strong year. He featured Tiger Woods in his best bets for the Masters and backed Brooks Koepka in his picks for the PGA Championship, and both players pulled off major victories. He completely nailed the season-ending Tour Championship. He predicted that Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy or Xander Schauffele could come out on top, and McIlroy won the event for the second time, with Schauffele coming in second and Koepka tied for third. Anyone who followed Johnson's advice saw HUGE returns.

He also nailed last year's Farmers Insurance Open. Johnson selected then top-ranked Justin Rose as one of his best bets to come out on top. The Englishman won by two strokes over Adam Scott to become just the third European player (McIlroy, Sergio Garcia) since World War II to post double-digit wins on the PGA Tour. Before the 2017 event, he predicted that 45-1 long shot Jon Rahm was ready to break out, and the Spaniard came away with his first Tour victory.

Now, Johnson -- the first producer of "Inside the PGA Tour," a longtime ABC Sports golf producer and the founder of the world's biggest golf stats database -- has issued his highly confident picks for the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

We can tell you Johnson wants no part of Xander Schauffele, one of the top Vegas favorites at 16-1. In fact, he says Schauffele has a history of struggles at his home event. Schauffele has been the runner-up in three of his last six Tour starts, but tied for 25th at the Farmers last year and missed three cuts previously.

Instead, Johnson is high on a GIGANTIC long shot who finished strong at Torrey Pines last year. This unheralded player ranks high in scrambling, which is key to beating the small greens in San Diego, and he also is strong with the putter. Anyone who backs this underdog could hit it BIG.
