Packers vs. Lions NFL Week 9 odds, trends: Aaron Rodgers could tie longest losing streak of career, but history hints at offensive breakout in Detroit
Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has lost five games in a row just once.
Can the Packers and Raiders void the Davante Adams trade? It sure seems like both teams have gotten worse since Green Bay shipped the All-Pro receiver to Las Vegas in March. The Packers enter Sunday's game in Detroit at 3-5 and on a four-game losing streak. Aaron Rodgers looks to avoid tying the longest skid of his career as the Packers are 3.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.
In a minor surprise, the Packers didn't get Rodgers any receiving help ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Reportedly, Green Bay was set to acquire Chase Claypool from Pittsburgh for a 2023 second-round pick, but then Chicago swooped in with its own second-rounder, which the Steelers obviously thought would be "better" – i.e. the Bears will finish with a worse record than the Packers.
Green Bay has zero players with at least 400 receiving yards through eight games for the first time since 2003. Its 18.1 points per game average is the team's lowest through eight games since 1992. The Packers have yet to score at least 28 points in a game, their longest streak at any point since 2005-06, and Rodgers has no games with at least three passing touchdowns, his longest streak to begin a season of his career.
This is the second time Rodgers has had a four-game skid. He also went on one in 2016 but Green Bay still finished 10-6 and made the playoffs. His lone five-game slide was in 2008, his first year as the starter, when the team finished 6-10. Currently, the Packers are given a season win total of 7.5 (Over -150 favorite), -210 odds to miss the playoffs and +170 to make.
Maybe Rodgers & Co. will get well Sunday. Detroit has the NFC's worst record at 1-6 and the Lions defense ranks last in points allowed (32.1 – most through seven games since 1948), yards allowed (421.3 yards per game) and third-down conversion rate (51%). Green Bay has scored 30-plus points in each of its last four games vs. Detroit. It is the longest streak by the Packers against the Lions since they did so in four in a row in 2007-08.
Detroit also has failed to cover four straight games after starting the season 3-0 against the spread. The team got worse this week by trading former Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota for draft picks. Coach Dan Campbell might not see Year 3.
