NFL Week 1 teaser best bets: Spread, total and primetime teaser picks from proven NFL expert

Teaser. The word carries a negative connotation. It conjures up the image of someone mocking or aggravating others.

In the realm of NFL wagering, however, a teaser can be a good thing. It refers to a play that involves at least two games with more favorable point spreads than are offered with a traditional bet. The trick is, you must win every game to collect. Still, many serious NFL gamblers gravitate to this alternative, well aware that additional points can make a world of difference in a league known for minuscule margins of victory.

Come to this corner of the SportsLine website each week to read three teaser suggestions. Our picks will be limited to two-game, six-point teasers, meaning that a half-dozen points will be tacked on in favor of our chosen team in each game.

One weekly selection will be based strictly on the spreads. If a preferred team is listed as a four-point underdog, we add on the extra points, converting the spread to plus-10. One selection will be based on over/unders. If a pegged game is assigned a total of 43 and our recommendation is an Under, the number will change to 49. One selection will be culled exclusively from the Sunday and Monday night games, either against the spread or over/under.
