NFL Props: Will Romo join the Cowboys' Ring of Honor?
Tony Romo owns most of the Cowboys' major career passing records, but his playoff success fell short of expectations. Will he get a spot among franchise legends on the Ring of Honor?
Â
There are 21 members of the Dallas Cowboys’ Ring of Honor.
Will Tony Romo be No. 22?
Romo called it a career after the 2016 season and will be in the broadcast booth as the lead NFL game analyst for CBS Sports for 2017.Â
All that’s left is post-career accolades. It starts with the franchise that scooped him up as an undrafted free agent in 2003.
Presenting a prop by betting website Sports Betting Dime:
Odds Tony Romo will be inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor (by Dec. 31, 2017): 9/2
There are three quarterbacks in the Ring of Honor: Don Meredith (1960-68), Roger Staubach (1969-79) and Troy Aikman (1989-2000).
Staubach and Aikman are NFL Hall of Fame QBs who led the Cowboys to Super Bowl championships. Their worthiness on the Ring of Honor is not debatable.
Meredith, who did not win a title, is considered the first true leader of the franchise and led the team to a pair of NFL Championship games in 1966 and 1967, the last of which was the Ice Bowl at Green Bay.
What does Romo have that those three do not? Basically every quarterback record in the storied franchise’s history.
He has passed for more yards (33,626) and touchdowns (245, 80 more than No. 2 Aikman) and has more fourth-quarter comebacks (28), among many other marks.
Romo often got ridiculed for interceptions, but he actually has the lowest interception rate in team history (2.6 percent of his passes were picked off; Aikman was 3.0 percent).
He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection in the eight seasons he eluded major injury.
BUT -- and it’s capitalized for a reason -- playoff success eluded him. In those eight seasons, Dallas went to the playoffs four times. The team went 2-4, failing to advance to an NFC Championship game, let alone a Super Bowl.
Romo finished with an impressive 78-49 record and was the face of the franchise for a decade. That should be worth something, right? He has at least one former teammate in his corner.Â
PICK: Romo is, statistically speaking, the most-accomplished quarterback in team history. If he had those career numbers for most franchises, he’d be bestowed with the highest team honor.
But this is the Cowboys. Success is defined by titles, not passing yards.
I suspect Romo has earned a spot in the Ring of Honor -- eventually. Without a Super Bowl, it’s not an immediate slam dunk. For these odds, which call for him to get the honor by the end of the calendar year, go with No. But it won't be a shock when he is bestowed the honor down the road.Â
