New York Jets Tight End Chris Herndon Facing 'Likelihood of a Two-Game Suspension'
Chris Herndon made a big splash as a rookie in 2018, but the Jets tight end appears headed for a two-game suspension to start the season.
New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon -- who impressed as a rookie with 39 catches for 502 yards and four touchdowns -- faces the "likelihood of a two-game suspension," ESPN.com reports. Herndon pleaded guilty in January to driving while intoxicated for a June 2018 incident in which his vehicle crashed into a 76-year-old man's SUV. Neither man was seriously hurt.
Jets quarterback Sam Darnold loves throwing to Herndon, a 6-4, 253-pounder out of Miami, and Herndon still is poised for a big year in new coach Adam Gase's offense. It's unclear when the suspension might be handed down.
According to the New York Post, Herndon wowed during OTAs with a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab. The catch recalled a stunning one-hander Herndon made against the Packers late last season.
"Chris is unique," Gase told reporters this offseason. "I don't think you'll find a lot of tight ends that are able to be on the field all three downs. Obviously, he's a very good receiver, he's very good in the run game, and he did a really good job in pass protection last year.
"And I think he helps the other guys that are there, the receivers, to where people have to account for him and he may dictate some different coverages."
Sportsbooks list the Jets as 3.5-point favorites for their home opener versus AFC East rival Buffalo; they're pegged at 80-1 to win the Super Bowl.
