Mets vs. Padres Wednesday MLB injury report, odds, pick: Pete Alonso, Starling Marte expected out for New York as total drops to 7 runs

The Mets are expected to be without Pete Alonso and Starling Marte tonight in San Diego.

The New York Mets had a three-game winning streak snapped and in a rare shutout loss Tuesday night in San Diego and it was quite a costly loss: Outfielder Starling Marte and first baseman Pete Alonso both left injured. Marte is likely bound for the injured list, and while it appears Alonso avoided anything serious, he's likely out tonight as well. New York is thus a +120 underdog at Caesars Sportsbook vs. the Padres and the total has dropped from an open of 7.5 runs to 7. (See tickets at StubHub)

Both players left in the second inning, first Alonso after getting hit with a Yu Darvish fastball on his right hand and then Marte with left quadriceps tightness. The Mets played the final seven innings with catcher Tomas Nido as the only bench player.  Buck Showalter was asked if in a best-case scenario he would imagine both Alonso and Marte back within a couple of days: "I love your optimism, but I don't share it at this point."

Marte, hitting .277 with seven homers and 33 RBIs and playing stellar defense in right field, is expected to go on the injured list at some point today once MRI results are back. The team would thus call someone up to take his spot. X-rays turned up negative on Alonso, but he was in quite a bit of pain so it's a major stretch to see him in action Tuesday – especially since the Mets have tomorrow off.

The former MLB home-run champion and NL Rookie of the Year leads the team with 16 homers, 54 RBIs and 61 hits while batting .282. Alonso hasn't missed a game this season. He owns a lifetime .944 OPS on the road, which is the best in Mets history (minimum 900 plate appearances). His .583 slugging percentage on the road is also the best franchise history.

Don't be shocked if there is a bit of payback by a Mets pitcher against the Padres tonight because Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil were plunked Tuesday as well. That's now 40 times the Mets have been hit by a pitch, by far the most in the majors.

Thus, New York will likely field a watered-down lineup against Padres lefty Sean Manaea (2-3, 3.77 ERA). He's coming off one of his best starts with the team, allowing one run and five hits with eight strikeouts over six in Milwaukee, although his bullpen blew a win. It was his fourth straight no-decision. Manaea's last win came on April 18.

New York's Chris Bassitt (4-3, 3.74 ERA) hasn't won since May 8. He took four straight no-decisions until being handed a loss at the Dodgers on Friday. When Bassitt is ahead in the count this year, batters are hitting just .182 off him. He has made one career start vs. San Diego and that was back in 2018.

MLB free pick: Have to back the Padres given the Mets' injuries.
