The Los Angeles Rams are trying to recover from a Super Bowl hangover, but going all-in to win that title has left them in dire straits. Few teams in the NFL can match the have the core talent of the Rams, but last season's 5-12 finish and an offseason sell-off leave a lot of questions. Can the stars stay healthy this time around, and how much will the mass departures affect the defense? Caesars Sportsbook lists the over/under for the Rams' win total at 6.5 in it latest 2023 NFL futures odds. Will they have enough juice left to be a surprise team in the NFC West this season?

Coach Sean McVay is back to lead a team that features quarterback Matthew Stafford and receiver Cooper Kupp on offense and three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald on the other side. That is about the extent of the talent, as many key pieces to the 2021 Super Bowl championship season were sold off. They included star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, safety Taylor Rapp, linebacker Bobby Wagner and pass rusher Leonard Floyd.

Only three other NFL teams have longer odds to win their division at Caesars Sporsbook than the Rams (+850). The good news for Rams fans is that one of those teams is another NFC West competitor, the Arizona Cardinals (+2700). Caesars lists the San Francisco 49ers as -200 favorites in its 2023 NFL Futures odds, ahead of the Seattle Seahawks, the +220 second choice. Los Angeles is +3000 to win the NFC and +7000 to win the Super Bowl.

The Los Angeles offense is still capable of greatness, with Stafford and Kupp a lethal combination. But Stafford started just nine games last season, throwing for 2,087 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Backup Baker Mayfield (850 yards, four TDs and two interceptions in five games) is now in Tampa Bay, leaving Brett Rypien and rookie Stetson Bennett behind the 35-year-old Stafford.

Kupp remained a star when he was able to play, putting up 75 catches for 812 yards and six touchdowns in nine games. The 2021 Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP had 42 receptions in the first four games. Kupp was knocked out in Week 10 with an ankle injury that required surgery. Stafford's problems started with a concussion a week later, and another concussion and a spinal contusion eventually ended his season. The Rams went 3-6 in their final nine games.

In the end, Los Angeles had the NFL's worst offense in 2022, with the passing attack managing 182.8 yards per game (27th in NFL) and the rushing unit 97.7 (T-28). The Rams averaged 18.1 points, sixth-fewest in the league. Tight end Tyler Higbee also was a bright spot, catching 72 balls for 620 yards, but the offensive line struggled to protect Stafford or open holes for Cam Akers (786 yards, 4.2 per carry) and Darrell Henderson (280, 4.0).

On the defensive side, the Rams were 20th in total yards (341.1 yards per game) and 21st in scoring (22.6). They had 38 sacks (21st in NFL), and Floyd (nine) and Wagner (six) led the way as Donald posted five. The 32-year-old superstar missed six games and considered retirement in the offseason, but Los Angeles will need a strong season from Donald in 2023.

McVay has been one of the league's best coaches, but he is a top candidate to head to a broadcasting gig in the near future. Stafford and Donald are in the twilight of their stellar careers and Kupp, 30, might not be far behind. The Rams' offseason was spent shipping out starters, but McVay and the remaining stars will be looking for one last run at glory.
