Lions vs. Bears pick, spread: Odds Mitchell Trubisky makes last-ever start for Chicago Week 13? Decent chance
The Bears will start Mitchell Trubisky at QB vs. Detroit Sunday, but it could be the last time under center in a Chicago uniform for the ex-No. 2 overall pick.
The preferred starting quarterback for embattled Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy is Nick Foles, and while Foles has returned to practice this week the former Super Bowl MVP is not 100 percent healthy off a hip injury. Thus, Mitchell Trubisky will make his second straight start for Chicago, and SportsLine offers odds on whether the former No. 2 overall pick will ever make another in a Bears uniform. Chicago, on a five-game losing streak, is a 3-point home favorite on the William Hill NFL odds vs. Detroit.
The short answer on whether Trubisky gets another shot after Sunday: It depends. There's a reason that Nagy turned to Foles way back in Week 3 and there's a reason that embattled GM Ryan Pace traded a fourth-round pick to Jacksonville for Foles this offseason.
If Foles is healthy enough to practice this week, the presumably means he should be ready for Week 14 and in that scenario would reclaim his job. Foles is also under contract for next season and Trubisky isn't – the team declined his fifth-year rookie option, so Trubisky will be with another team in 2021. That's fact.
If the Bears fall to 5-7 by being upset by the Lions, the season is over anyways. In that case, it's wise to either let Foles get more comfortable in the offense/with his teammates going forward or give Tyler Bray his first real game action. Chicago clearly will be taking a quarterback fairly early in the 2021 draft.
In last Sunday night's 41-25 loss to Green Bay, Trubisky did pass for three scores but also had three costly turnovers. Most of Trubisky's positive numbers came in garbage time when Green Bay was up 41-10.
There's no doubt that Trubisky likes facing the Lions, though. He led a huge comeback win in Week 1 and in six career starts for the Lions has thrown for 1,601 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions for a very good rating of 106.0. Mitch has four straight games vs. Detroit with at least three touchdowns and a passer rating better than 100.0.
In an oddity, the Bears have won their past four games as a favorite but lost them all against the spread. Chicago hasn't lost six straight games straight up in one season since 2002.Â
Sunday is Detroit's first game since firing Coach Matt Patricia, with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell taking over. Houston and Atlanta both won their first game earlier this year immediately after firing their head coach.Â
