JJ Redick trade odds: 76ers favored over Celtics, Nets to deal for Pelicans' three-point specialist

It's not really a matter of if but when regarding the New Orleans Pelicans trading guard J.J. Redick. The Pelicans are going nowhere this season and Redick is a pending unrestricted free agent so better to get something for him while they can. Lonzo Ball could also be dealt by the March 25 trade deadline, but we'll deal with Ball at a later date. The Athletic's Shams Charania was the first to report that the Pelicans are looking at Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn as trade partners because the organization doesn't want to do wrong by the well-respected veteran Redick and his family still lives in Brooklyn.

Redick also surely wants to compete for a title, so that's why the Knicks aren't mentioned. The other Atlantic team, Toronto, doesn't really need Redick and he probably wouldn't want to go there regardless since the Raptors are playing home games temporarily in Tampa, Fla.

There is some scuttlebutt a deal could be imminent even though the trade deadline is nearly two months away. Why imminent? Tuesday is last day in which a player can be traded and still be used again in another deal prior to the March 25 trade deadline. In addition, Saturday is when players who signed free-agent contracts this past offseason can first become eligible to be traded, so that opens up more options to get Redick.

Another reason something could be close is that first-year Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy isn't even using Redick any longer as he has been DNP-CD the past two games. The 36-year-old Redick isn't what he used to be in averaging just 7.9 points, but any team could use his normally reliable three-point shooting. He's a career 41.4 percent shooter from deep. That is 18th-best in league history among qualified players.

Redick played for the 76ers from 2017-19 before signing as a free agent with the Pelicans ahead of the 2019-20 season. Philadelphia GM Daryl Morey isn't shy about making big splashes. The Sixers do own their 2021 first-round pick, although it clearly will be near the end of the first round unless Joel Embiid suffers a season-ending injury soon. Redick also knows new Sixers head coach Doc Rivers well from their days with the Clippers.

Brooklyn already is the +130 betting favorite at William Hill Sportsbook to win the Eastern Conference and adding Redick to Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving would make the Nets absolutely terrifying offensively – if they aren't already. Brooklyn already gave up the farm to get Harden, so what could it really offer New Orleans?

Trades in the NBA have to have nearly matching salaries unless a club has an exemption on its roster to take on said salary. The Celtics have a $28.6MM traded player exception they acquired in the Gordon Hayward sign-and-trade with the Hornets this offseason.

Thus, financially the Celtics would have no issues taking on what's left of Redick's $13M salary. Boston does own its own 2021 first-round pick and also has two seconds (one from Oklahoma City).
