Giants vs. Dolphins NFL injury report, odds: Daniel Jones may play after all, spread dropping; Kadarius Toney expected out
Giants starting QB Daniel Jones was in question for Sunday's game in Miami but now is trending toward playing.
There were multiple reports Tuesday that New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones was unlikely to play in Sunday's game at the surging Miami Dolphins due to a neck injury and that journeyman Mike Glennon was expected to start. Mike Glennon of the 6-21 career NFL record. To no surprise, a potential Glennon start jumped the Giants-Dolphins spread from Miami -2.5 to as high as -6, but now comes word that Jones could play after all and the number is back down to -4 at Caesars Sportsbook.
Jones strained his neck on the second play of last Sunday's upset of the Eagles and played through it. The former No. 6 overall pick out of Duke had a solid game, throwing for 202 yards and a TD while rushing nine times for 30 yards. Jones didn't turn the ball over, and when he doesn't the Giants usually win.
On Thursday, new Giants offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, who replaced the recently-fired Jason Garrett ahead of Week 12, said he is "expecting" Jones be the quarterback in Miami. However, after Jones was limited for a second straight practice Thursday, embattled coach Joe Judge wasn't nearly as optimistic, saying Jones' status "is in the hands of the doctors now" and could be a game-time decision "if need be." Clearly, there may be some gamesmanship going on here.
Rookie first-round receiver Kadarius Toney is not expected to play. Toney sat out Week 12 with a quad injury and is now listed with an oblique injury and hasn't practiced through Thursday. Fellow wideout Sterling Shepard is in question after missing Week 12 with a quad injury.
New York is 4-1 against the spread in its past five games thanks in large part to a defense that has allowed just 15.2 ppg in that span. The Under is 5-0 in them.
Miami looked dead in the water at 1-7 but has won four straight games, each by at least seven points, to get back into the AFC wild-card race. The Fins are still priced as -3500 favorites to miss the postseason, with making it at +1000. Miami is allowing just 11.5 ppg during the winning streak.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has completed better than 80 percent of his passes in each of the last two weeks (vs. Panthers and Jets) to become the fourth player in NFL history with a completion percentage of 80 or higher (minimum 30 attempts) in consecutive games. No player ever has had four games with a completion percentage 80 or better in a single season (min. 30 attempts). Tua also was right on 80 percent in a last-second Week 7 loss to Atlanta.
Giants-Dolphins is the +300 favorite to be the lowest-scoring game Sunday. The total is set at 40.5, which is the lowest.Â
