First NFL coach fired odds entering Week 4: Matt Nagy's tenure with Bears could end with upset loss to Lions Sunday

Chicago's Matt Nagy is back on the hottest seat in the NFL.

The Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach during a season, but another embarrassing effort this Sunday vs. the Detroit Lions could spell the end for Matt Nagy. Most Bears fans wanted ownership to pull the plug on Nagy this past Sunday following a historically bad offensive showing vs. the Cleveland Browns. That shot Nagy back into the favored role vs. SportsLine oddsmakers to be the first NFL coach fired/leave his job this season.

Rather laughably – I'm a fan and not laughing at all – the Bears managed 47 total yards in the 26-6 loss to the Browns and one passing yard in Justin Fields' NFL starting debut. He was sacked nine times, and it sure didn't look like Nagy made any in-game adjustments to save the future of the franchise from getting seriously injured. Like, perhaps, rolling Fields out occasionally to get away from Myles Garrett.

The Bears averaged 1.1 yards per play overall, the second-fewest by any team in a game this century. Fields was just 6-for-20 passing and was hit on 15 of his 29 drop-backs. Chicago's 47 total yards were its fewest since 1981, and including playoffs its was the 22nd time the Bears scored fewer than 20 points in Nagy's 53 games. And he's an offensive guru?

Garrett set the franchise record with 4.5 sacks and told NBC's Mike Florio that the Bears' basic offense made them simple to stop.

"You almost can't even make it up, it's that bad," Nagy said after the game and added Monday that "everything is on the table" in terms of him possibly giving up play-calling like he did late last season.

Nagy also added that all three of the team's QBs – Fields, Andy Dalton and Nick Foles – are under consideration to start against Detroit. Dalton missed Week 3 with a left knee bruise and his week-to-week. Fields hurt his hand but said he was fine and X-rays were negative. If Nagy starts Foles, there will be a full-on revolt in the Windy City. The Bears' season win total is down to 6.5 at Caesars Sportsbook.

If Chicago as a 3-point home favorite doesn't beat winless Detroit, the Bears could be looking at a 1-8 record entering their bye as they still have trips to Las Vegas, Tampa and Pittsburgh and home games vs. Green Bay and San Francisco left before the week off. It's a bit easier to fire a coach during a bye week to give the players more time to adjust to the transition.

The Vikings' Mike Zimmer had been the +400 favorite to be the first coach fired entering Week 3, but Minnesota upset Seattle to improve to 1-2. The New York Giants' Joe Judge was the second-favorite then and remains so after New York lost at home to winless Atlanta to fall to 0-3 for the second year in a row. Big Blue now has a season win total of just 4.5.
