Dolphins vs. Raiders NFL Week 3 injury report, odds: Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for Miami, has been profitable against spread in 32 career starts; Reid Sinnett backup QB

Tua Tagoaviloa is out and Jacoby Brissett will start for the Dolphins at QB Sunday in Las Vegas.

The Miami Dolphins have ruled out starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for Sunday's game at the Las Vegas Raiders, with Jacoby Brissett making his first career start for the Fins but 33rd overall in the NFL. Brissett is an ugly 12-20 straight up as a starter but a slightly profitable 16-14-2 against the spread. Miami had been a 3.5-point underdog but most books already have jumped that to +4.

One knock on Tua at Alabama was that he was injury-prone, and he was knocked out in the first quarter of last Sunday's 35-0 loss to Buffalo with fractured ribs. That Tua already has been ruled out this week doesn't bode well for him in Week 4, either. Let the Deshaun Watson trade rumors resume.

Brissett was 24-for-40 for 169 yards and a pick in relief vs. the Bills. He spent last year as Philip Rivers' backup in Indianapolis and last started in 2019, going 7-8 SU for the Colts. The only other QB on the Miami roster is Reid Sinnett, and indeed he will serve as the No. 2.

I do this for a living and have barely heard of Sinnett. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder stared one season at the University of San Diego and went undrafted in 2020 (originally signed to Bucs practice squad). Sinnett was waived by the Dolphins and re-signed to the practice squad on the eve of this season. Sinnett did play in all three preseason games and in fact was the only Miami QB to play in the finale vs. Cincinnati, completing 22-for-33 for 343 yards, two TDs and a pick.

Brissett/Sinnett may have the services of big-play receiver Will Fuller. The offseason free agent addition was suspended Week 1 and missed Week 2 for personal reasons but was back at practice this week.

Under coach Brian Flores, the Fins have been tremendous value as road underdogs in covering 17 of their past 23. They also have not lost consecutive games straight up overall since Weeks 1-2 last year.

The Raiders, meanwhile, are an unlikely 2-0 as they were underdogs Week 1 vs. Baltimore and Week 2 in Pittsburgh. It's the first time in the Super Bowl Era that Raiders have started 2-0 with both wins against playoff teams from last season and first time since 1982 they have started 2-0 with back-to-back upset wins. Derek Carr leads the NFL with 817 yards passing, the most in any two-game span in Raiders history.

It's not clear if top Raiders running back Josh Jacobs will play after missing the Steelers win due to injury. Las Vegas is 0-4 ATS in its past four as a betting favorite.

Miami was a 2-point favorite in Las Vegas in Week 16 last year and won 26-25 in a remarkable ending. Tua started that game but was ineffective and pulled. Ryan Fitzpatrick hit Mack Hollins on a desperation 41-yard heave with 19 seconds left that also included a roughing the passer penalty. It led to Jason Sanders' winning 44-yard field goal. Carr threw for 336 yards and a TD in the loss.
