Coronavirus: Arizona pitcher Mike Leake first known MLB player to opt-out of season

Arizona pitcher Mike Leake has decided not to play baseball in 2020 due to the coronavirus.

Major League Baseball players who decide not to play this season in a pandemic must inform their teams of that opt-out choice this week. Those who are deemed "high risk" by an independent doctor will still be paid and accrue service time. Those who aren't but just don't want to risk it will not be paid or get service time. On Monday, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake became the first known player to choose not to play in 2020.

Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen has confirmed the decision. Leake, who is in the final season of a five-year, $80 million contract (mutual $5 million buyout on $18 million option in 2021), had a 12-11 record with a 4.29 ERA last year, splitting time between the Seattle Mariners and Diamondbacks after being traded midseason. Leake was slightly profitable for MLB bettors as he was worth plus-$142 if $100 was wagered on his team to win in each of his 32 starts.

The 32-year-old right-hander was expected to be the team's No. 5 starter behind new addition Madison Bumgarner and holdovers Robbie Ray, Zac Gallen and Luke Weaver. Merrill Kelly and lefty Alex Young probably will get the first shot to take Leake's spot.

It's not clear if Leake is considered "high risk" or not. If not, he would be giving up around $5 million in pro-rated pay. His agent offered this statement:

"During this global pandemic, Mike and his family had many discussions about playing this season. They took countless factors into consideration, many of which are personal to him and his family. After thorough consideration, he has chosen to opt out of playing in 2020. This was not an easy decision for Mike. He wishes the best of luck and health for his Diamondback teammates this season and he's looking forward to 2021."

Leake absolutely will not be the only player to opt-out and this may open the floodgates as some guys just don't want to be "first." The Diamondbacks open their summer camp Friday at Chase Field in Phoenix. Arizona has an Over-Under win total of 31 at William Hill sportsbook for the 60-game season.
