Connor McDavid NHL odds: Oilers superstar has locked up Hart Trophy MVP honors, historic 70-goal milestone potentially within reach

Edmonton's Connor McDavid could reach the historic 70-goal milestone.

You really aren't supposed to use the word lock in sports betting, but Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid could go on an Aaron Rodgers-style darkness retreat the rest of the regular season and still win the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP for a third time in his career. FanDuel currently lists McDavid as a whopping -4000 favorite to win the award. But will McDavid, who just scored his 60th goal of the season, reach the historic 70-goal milestone? SportsLine offers odds.

I'm honestly not sure why FanDuel even has Hart Trophy odds active, as just about every other sportsbook I check doesn't. Odds to win the Rocket Richard Trophy as the league's top goal-scorer have been down for a while. As spectacular as McDavid has been in his career, and he's still just 26(!) and hasn't won a Rocket Richard Trophy. His previous career high in goals was 44, set last year, which was only good for seventh in the league and second on his own team behind Leon Draisaitl.

In Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win over Arizona, Edmonton's fifth straight victory, McDavid opened the scoring with his 59th goal of the year and then won it at 1:31 in OT with No. 60. It took McDavid 72 games to get to 60, the fastest since Teemu Selanne did it in 70 games in 1992-93.

McDavid became the fourth active player to record 60 goals in a season, joining Washington's Alex Ovechkin (65 in 2007-08), Toronto's Auston Matthews (60 in 2021-22) and Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos (60 in 2011-12). The NHL has now featured 60-goal scorers in consecutive seasons for the fourth time ever. McDavid's next goal will be No. 300 for his career and he is on pace to become the third-fastest active player to reach the mark.

The NHL (and Oilers) single-season record for goals is completely untouchable: 92 by Wayne Gretzky in 1981-82. That's one of 14 times a player has scored at least 70. It last happened in 1992-93 when Selanne and Alexander Mogilny both hit 76 when the NHL played an 84-game schedule. Ovechkin, the NHL's No. 2 all-time goal-scorer, has the most goals in a season in the 21st century with his 65.

Ovechkin's modern era mark seems likely to fall. McDavid is on pace for 68 goals and Edmonton has 10 games left (next on Saturday vs. Vegas). Edmonton really can't rest McDavid as it battles for playoff positioning and perhaps the Pacific Division title. FanDuel gives him an over/under of 66.5 goals, with the Over a slight favorite.

SportsLine Projection Model creator Stephen Oh forecasts McDavid for 8.8 more goals scored and a roughly 45% chance at 70. Edmonton has some really bad defensive teams left on the schedule in Arizona, Anaheim twice and San Jose twice. He could get the 10 he needs in just those games -- McDavid has four goals against the Coyotes, two against the Ducks and two against the Sharks this year.
