Celtics vs. Magic spread, odds: Will Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown pass more Wednesday? Boston implosion could be imminent with upset loss

If the Boston Celtics lose in Orlando on Wednesday, things could get really ugly.

It's a good thing that Ime Udoka is a first-year coach with the Boston Celtics or he might be in major trouble right as now the Celtics are 2-5 and infighting in the wake of an embarrassing loss to Chicago. Marcus Smart called out his All-Star teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to pass the ball more, so it will be fascinating to see the fallout Wednesday night when Boston visits Orlando. The Celtics are -7.5 at Caesars Sportsbook and the book also has released individual assist totals.

On Monday at home, Boston led the Bulls 103-89 entering the fourth quarter yet managed to lose 128-114. It was the first time in the shot-clock era (since 1954-55) that any team lost by at least 14 points after leading by at least 14 entering the fourth. Boston's 11 fourth-quarter points were its fewest in any quarter since 2017.

"It was a lapse of concentration and killer instinct for the most part," Udoka said. "A lesson learned that's gonna hurt and should hurt, and we should be pissed off about it. We keep talking about this early in the season; going through things and we have to shore up some things and we need a lead."

Brown had 28 points and Tatum 20 but each had just three assists. Tatum scored two points on 1-for-8 shooting in the fourth quarter, while Brown was scoreless on two shots. Smart, not exactly known as a scorer, had 16 points on 5-for-11 shooting.

"Every team knows we're trying to go to Jayson and Jaylen," Smart said afterward. "Every team is programmed and studied to stop Jayson and Jaylen. I think everybody's scouting report is to make those guys pass the ball. They don't want to pass the ball. … They're going to have to make another step and find ways to not only create for themselves but create for others on this team to open up the court for them later down in the game."

Needless to say, Smart's comments caused a firestorm in Boston. His point was there is too much isolation on offense. The Celtics rank 27th in the league in isolation offense. The team is adjusting to a new coach and life without Kemba Walker at point guard.

It should be noted that Smart is shooting an ugly 29.3 percent from the field on the season and 28.2 percent from deep with a history of questionable shot selection. He also was suspended by Udoka just a couple of weeks ago for missing a team flight in the preseason. Smart is listed at Over/Under 4.5 assists tonight, Tatum at 3.5 and Brown 2.5.

Orlando is one of the NBA's worst teams at 2-7 but does have unlikely wins over the Knicks and Timberwolves – the Magic have yet to win at home, however. They have lost six straight vs. Boston. Guard Gary Harris is questionable for Orlando.
