Carolina Panthers 2023 futures: Super Bowl odds, win total picks, best bets, schedule and more

Top overall pick Bryce Young should bring some excitement to the Carolina Panthers, but can they translate that into victories in 2023? Find out what SportsLine's NFL experts have to say about the upcoming season

The Carolina Panthers' rebuild has been ongoing for several years, but a key addition and a new coach have hopes high as training camp kicks off. The Panthers are seven years removed from their loss to the Broncos in Super Bowl 50, and they have made the playoffs once since then.

After going 7-10 in 2022, for their fifth straight losing season, the Panthers made a splash before the draft, making a huge trade with the Chicago Bears for the top pick. They used that selection on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner. He will be joined by new coach Frank Reich, who led the Indianapolis Colts to two playoff appearances in five seasons.

Reich and Young will be looking to revive an offense that ranked 29th overall in total yards in 2022. The defense was only slightly better, ranking 20th. Still, in a weak NFC South where every team had a losing record last season, even slight progress could be enough.

Caesars Sportsbook lists the Panthers as the third favorites to win the division at +340 in its latest 2023 NFL futures odds. The New Orleans Saints are +120 favorites, followed by the Atlanta Falcons (+240), with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers clear +800 longshots. Carolina is +3000 to win the NFC and +7000 to win the Super Bowl, while its over/under for regular-season wins is 7.5.

The offense should look a lot different in 2023, and not just with Young behind center. The Panthers were 29th in the league in passing offense but 10th in rushing. Now, leading rusher D'Onta Foreman is in Chicago and former star Christian McCaffrey is in San Francisco. Reich will build around Young after the team traded a package that included top wideout D.J. Moore and next year's first-round pick to get him.

Reich plans to spread the ball around, and receivers Adam Thielen and D.J. Chark and tight end Hayden Hurst were brought in to that end. They will join wideouts Jonathan Mingo, a 2023 second-round pick, and 2021 second-rounder Terrace Marshall. Miles Sanders, who had 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns last year with the Eagles, comes in to carry the load in the backfield.

Defensively, the Panthers have some players who can get to the quarterback, but they needed depth after posting just 35 sacks (26th) in 2022. Brian Burns had 12.5, and Frankie Luvu and Marquis Haynes combined for 12. DJ Johnson was added in the third round out of Oregon to add another playmaker up front. Derrick Brown, a first-round pick in 2020, is a disrupter in the middle and has Pro Bowl potential.

The Carolina secondary has talent, but injuries have slowed its progress. Cornerback Jaycee Horn, the No. 8 overall pick in 2021, has played just 16 games over his two seasons. Opposite him, Donte Jackson and C.J. Henderson also have been banged up. Safety Vonn Bell was added to bring toughness to a unit that had just 17 takeaways last season (28th).

A lot is riding on Young and other young players continuing to improve, but the NFC South could be there for the taking. The Panthers have had a revolving door at the quarterback spot, with Teddy Brigewater, Sam Bradford, Sam Darnold and even PJ Walker taking a spin.

If Young and Reich can get it right -- and with the Panthers facing the fourth-easiest schedule in the NFL -- they could be a surprise. They went 5-3 in the final eight games last season. The second half of the 2023 schedule will be the key, as four of their last six games are against NFC South foes..
