Big Apple Blues: Giants favored over Jets on NFL odds to be first New York team with win this season
It looks to be a rough season for New York football fans regarding the Jets and Giants. Which wins first?
Want to win a bar bet someday? Ask whomever how many NFL teams play in New York. They might either say two (if they forget the Buffalo Bills) or three (if they remember the Bills). The answer is actually one because the Jets and Giants play in New Jersey. But that's a story for another day. Those two clubs are both winless disasters entering Week 4 and SportsLine offers odds on which team wins first this season.
The Jets are currently 7-point home underdogs Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, who could be without their top two receivers in AJ Brown (most likely out) and Julio Jones (questionable). Gang Green rather amazingly has not led once this season, the only team in the NFL that hasn't, or scored a first-half touchdown.
Rookie No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson has the worst rating in the NFL at 51.6 and is tied for the league lead with seven picks. Wilson has been sacked 15 times, worst in the NFL, and on pace to break the single-season sack record of 76, set by Houston's David Carr in 2002.
The Jets are last by far in scoring at 6.7 yards per game, last in first downs (15 per game) and interception rate (6.7%), 31st in sack rate (14.3%), and 30th in yards per game (250), yards per play (4.1), passing yards per game (170), yards per pass (4.9) and red-zone efficiency (33.3%). Their leading rusher (rookie Michael Carter) has all of 89 yards and their leading receiver (Braxton Berrios) just 150. Multiple NFL running backs have had more than 89 yards in a game so far and a few receivers have topped 150.
Coach Robert Saleh's team is given an Over/Under of 3.5 wins this season. When is the first realistic victory? Actually, next week against 1-2 Atlanta in London. New York opened as only a 4-point underdog. The Jets are on the bye in Week 6 followed by a trip to New England. Other potential wins: Week 11 vs. Miami, Week 12 at Houston, Week 13 vs. Philadelphia, Week 16 vs. Jacksonville.
The Giants, meanwhile, are close to being 2-1 as they've lost back-to-back games vs. Washington and Atlanta on field goals as time expired. They would have beaten the Football Team if not for a stupid penalty by Dexter Lawrence.
Big Blue is a 7.5-point dog Sunday in New Orleans and likely will be without two starting receivers in Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton. The Giants almost surely aren't winning Week 5 in Dallas (Cowboys opened as 8.5-point favorites) or Week 6 vs. the LA Rams. Maybe Week 7 at home vs. Carolina? Their bye isn't until Week 10. The Giants' season win total is set at Over/Under 4.5.
While the upcoming schedule looks tougher for the Giants, they also have been that much closer to winning than their MetLife Stadium co-tenants. The Jets did beat the Giants in this year's preseason opener, 12-7, but sadly they don't play in the regular season. Probably be a similar score in terms of total points.Â
- Jets' next five weeks after Sunday: vs. Falcons (London), BYE, at Patriots, vs. Bengals, at Colts
- Giants' next five weeks after Sunday: at Cowboys, vs. Rams, vs. Panthers, at Chiefs, vs. Raiders
On a separate last winless team prop, the Jets are +175 favorites, followed by the Lions (+250), Jaguars (+300), Giants (+400) and Colts. That any team goes winless is +600.
