Best bets for Tuesday, January 13

The Thunder are fresh off an NBA title and have been the hottest team in the NBA this year, but the Spurs have been a thorn in their side. San Antonio sits second in the Western Conference behind OKC at 27-12 and has handed the Thunder three of their seven losses this year. The return of Victor Wembanyama to the lineup after a blood clot scare ended his 2024-25 season prematurely can't be mentioned enough as the young big man is averaging 24.3 points per game along with 11.1 rebounds per contest. The Thunder have dominated the rest of the league outside of the Spurs thanks in large part to another strong year from reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who ranks among the top scorers in the NBA at 31.9 points per game on the season. The SportsLine Projection Model, which simulates every game 10,000 times, leans towards the Thunder in this matchup as OKC covers in nearly 60% of its simulations.

UConn, which won two of the last three NCAA titles, face a big test on Tuesday with a road clash against a ranked Seton Hall team. The Huskies are 16-1 with that lone loss coming to Arizona, while the Pirates are 14-2 with close losses to USC and Villanova on their ledger. UConn is a 5.5-point favorite, per the latest SportsLine consensus odds as the Huskies aim to emerge as a title contender after a down season last year. The SportsLine Model expects UConn's strong start to the year to continue as they win outright in the vast majority of simulations and cover nearly 75% of the time.

Over on the ice, the Atlantic Division-leading Red Wings aim to extend their division lead Tuesday night as they face a Bruins team that's trying to move up the standings. Detroit has won four in a row and sits at 60 points, good for a slim one-point lead over Tampa Bay, which has won 10 in a row, for the division lead. Boston, meanwhile, is at 52 points and has won three in a row entering Tuesday's clash with Detroit. The SportsLine model likes the Bruins to continue their hot play and pick up a win at home as they win outright in 57% of model simulations.
