The 2023 NFL season is rapidly approaching and optimism is through the roof for myriad franchises across the league. Other organizations are in the midst of transition, however, and the Arizona Cardinals fit the bill. The Cardinals finished with a 4-13 record in 2022, landing ahead of only the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears in the final standings. Arizona also lost its final seven games, leading to a coaching change and general upheaval for an organization that clearly seems to be rebuilding.

Arizona has a first-time head coach in Jonathan Gannon. He was hired after serving as the defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles over the last two seasons, and Gannon is charged with overseeing a young team with some clear holes. The questions begin at quarterback, with former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray suffering an ACL tear in mid-December that led to a January surgery. He aims to return for Week 1, but that is far from certain, and the Cardinals have other uncertainties on offense.

DeAndre Hopkins is now in Tennessee, leaving Marquise "Hollywood" Brown as the No. 1 pass-catcher for Arizona. The Cardinals suffered turnover issues, committing 25 giveaways a season ago, and Arizona finished below the league average both on the ground and through the air. Veteran running back James Conner does return to anchor the backfield after back-to-back seasons with more than 1,000 total yards, and Brown put up 709 yards in 12 games last season after a 1,000-yard campaign in 2021.

On defense, the Cardinals also finished No. 31 in the NFL in points allowed (26.4 per game) a season ago. Since then, a handful of high-profile defenders, including JJ Watt, have vacated the roster. Arizona also finished in the bottom five of the NFL in third down defense, red zone defense, first downs allowed, passing touchdowns allowed, and points allowed per drive, leaving plenty of work to do. All told, Arizona is currently projected as worst team in the NFC and with the lowest season win total in the NFL, though it is certainly possible that Murray's on-time record could provide more optimism along with the coaching change.
